Newly completed project:
Polytech M14s, sent to Smith Enterprise; receiver lapped to fit USGI Bolt, weapon was then heat treated and Parkerized. All USGI internals. Smith M14 ScopeMount. IOR M2 Tactical (.308) and Aimpoint Comp ML2. Harris Bipod.

The M14 with the Aimpoint....was that the same set up Shugart(?) had in BHD???

I seem to remember the Aimpoint being a little lower, and perhaps mounted over the handguard.

How do you like the Aimpoint on the M1A???? Have you had a chance to shoot it???

Smith does great work on the Polytech M-14s don't they, Cincinnatus?

Did they do a trigger job on it?

They sure made a shooter outta what I at first thought was a total piece of crap several years ago and they did an even better job on my M1 "Tanker" Garand.

Smith does great work. No, I didn't get the trigger done, I just dropped in a USGI group.

As a rule, most of my rifles sit in the safe with Aimpoints on them.
I figure if what I want to shoot is far enough away to require a scope, I'll have time to mount it

The aimpoint IS high, but it's mounted on the Smith scope mount. To mount it lower, I'd have to go with the scout mount, which limits my options. I don't find the height to be a problem, though. Two eye Aimpoint shooting doesn't really REQUIRE as tight a cheekweld, anyhow.

I like shooting with the Aimpoint on her.
Keep in mind...
...the Aimpoint dot is SMALLER at 100m than the front sight blade.

I put on one of those rubber pads, the ones that extend the butt 1".
Helps make it stick in my shoulder better.
Lots of places sell them.
Cheaper Than Dirt has 'em.

It's a Smith. Basically it's a Brookfield clone.
I prefer it to the ARMS#18, because of the long rail.

I also have a Poly Tech M14S with the Smith Enterprises bolt conversion. Shout it from the mountain tops. Say it loud and proud. "I OWN A CHINESE M-14 AND I LOVE IT!" I wouldn't trade mine for a Springfield Inc., that's for sure.

Cheek weld is good.
Barrel is chrome lined.
I've only briefly shot it, since it's return from Smith (to zero the irons and the scopes).
So far, she's shooting about 1 1/2" MOA. I'm the rusty one, though. I think after a few more trips to the range, I'll be well under MOA.
I'm still getting used to .308, M14s, and the new optics.

Is the barrel the original Polytech one? How old is your gun before you decided to change to USGI parts?

It's not the original Barrel, but it is a later Polytech. I like their receivers, and their barrels.

I changed out the parts before firing a round through it. I bought the rifle with this project in mind. I'm sure she would have performed well as is, though.

Those Polytechs are the best kept secret in the M14 world. The later ones with hinged buttplates have good heatreat in the receiver. The bolt isn't as good as GI but I've got thousands of rounds on mine with no problem. They're better than the cast M1A bolts.

I'm shooting mine until it really needs rework. No reason to throw away good parts.
