As anyone ever tried to fit a FAL gas piston system to an AR? It appears it might work but that could be deceiving. Any proof of concept or trial fitting? Any brain storming even?

Haven't you been looking at TopCrest's project updates?

www.ar15.com/forums/topic.html?id=126827

Version 1 had an adjustible gas system.  Version 2 is keeping it simple.

Yes there was one made - it was called the Rhino system.

It actually caused wear problems and was less reliable than the current system.

I guess I wasn't clear. I don't mean just the concept of some kind of gas piston. I mean use the actual FAL parts to convert an AR. The gas block gas tube and op-rod ect. Use the adjustable system on a barrel turned just for the parts and find a way to mate the gas tube to the upper receiver. Istead of designing a new system use one that already exist.
