I am about to get a springfield 1911 I currently have a glock ....ill be keeping my glock 21....my question is this... will out of box 1911's feed hollow point ammo...I had a cheep 1911 before a "Charles Daly" it was fun to shoot it fed hard ball great and was acurate as hell...but if I tried to use hydra shock or any hollowpoint ammo it would miss feed (JAM).....anyone???

my SA milspec occasionally coughs on hollowpoint. the 1911 was designed for .45acp ball.

on the other hand, i know people who've had a little buff/polishing done to the feed ramp who use hollowpoint with no trouble.

Well I have a Kimber and I polished the ramp when I got it. I have had no trouble feeding it hollow point ammo.....

Your Springfield should feed JHPs just fine. However, if it doesn't making it do so is not that hard. One thing to remember is to always use good magazines. Go out and buy a few Wilson Combat #47 7 round mags and that will help insure the gun feeds all types of ammo reliably. Remember the gun is only 1/3 of the reliability equation.

Go easy with the dremmel buddy...I almost ruined a perfeclty good springfield with one.

I'd get some 1500 grit sandpaper and do it by hand. takes some time, but better to polish slow than mess something up.

It should feed them fine, but like the others said you could polish the feed ramp. Just be careful to not change the geometry. There is a little gap designed into the barrel and frame and it is meant to be there, so don't grind these parts to match up flush. The barrel should be throated on the SA already so all that will be needing polish will probably be the frame.

Polishing with some rouge on a buff pad in a dremel tool should not remove any metal. I would think that's the best way to polish the feed ramp. Though I've never done it, I know other 1911 owners who have.

I have had two Springfield 1911A1 Loaded models, and neither have choked on ANY hollowpoints I've fed them.

If you got one that did, polishing the feed ramp and throat should help. Simple work to do.

Marvl's right about the dremmel. dont pay someone to do something you can do yourself (besides, its fun).

just be careful, i hit the side of the dremmel on the frame and scratched the sh*t out of it, thats why I said to do it by hand. The rouge and buffer pad are much faster...i just like to baby my guns.

My Springfield TRP feeds hollow points just fine (Fed Hydrashok 230 gr) right out of the box. I only use Wilson mags in my 1911's and they never let me down.

You may want to try the Winchester USA brand 230 gr. JHP's, after you get your Springfield in-hand. They appear to expand well from the pics I've seen (sorry, don't remember where), they have a good ball-like shape which looks like it should feed well, and they're inexpensive to boot!

My unmodified Series '70 hasn't choked on one yet.

Another thing you can try - Remington Golden Sabers have a rounder profile on the nose than the (early) Hyrda Shocks. I think Federal may have changed the shape some but they still have a truncated cone look to me. The Remington Golden Sabers zip right through all my 45s...ECS

Basically, smoothing it and shining it.

All of the newer Springfields come with polished feed ramps (including the mil-specs) and you should be fine but if not try polishing it yourself.

I have the Springfield Mil Spec, and the Mil-Spec Operator on layaway. The Mil spec that I do have works great with ball and hollow points. No one hang up in over 1000 rounds.

I've yet to shoot the 1911 that won't feed the 230 grain Federal HydraShok.

My Wilson eats Hydro-Shocks, Winclean, Corbon, Magsafe and Glaser. Never had a hickup.

Dont forget that allot of the 1911's that have tighter tollerances take about 500 rounds to break them in. After that you should have no problems.

It's easy to tune a 1911 to feed anything. I can load spent brass in a mag ( wilson )release the slide, and they will feed !
I shoot 200gr. hardcast semi-wadcutters with 100% reliability.

It's also easy to remove too much and F*ck the gun up.
Kimber or Springfield, it doesn't matter.

It should eat Hydra-shocks out of the box.
