My 11-87 Police will usually fail to cycle with lighter field loads, and even some of the high brass loads- only buckshot and slugs seem to be %100 reliable. The gun is still nearly brand new, and I have thoroughly cleaned it, making sure the gas port was clear, that the gas ring was intact...nothing seems to be wrong there.

About a year or so back, I read quite a long thread about here about adjusting the size of the gas port on the 11-87 and 1100's for reliable operation with all standard shotshells-though they did say that the recoil would be sharper...I just don't remember much else about the thread.

One gunsmith a friend of my spoke to said it would eventually beat the gun up(he's having idential problems with his 11-87 police), but it seems that the Remington factory shortened 11-87's probably are modified like this-the 14" models run, and with less barrel ahead of the gas port, there's less gass operating the action, unless they open the port. Just like cutting a 20" ar15 barrel to 16"-you also have to open the port for it to work reliably.

So, am I off base? Is there another fix besides having the port opened up a bit? Anyone have any information on whether or not this is a good idea, and who does it?
