I don't know, but it's easy to measure with a cleaning rod.  Put a double patch on a jag so it fits tight, then mark a spot on the rod and slowly slide it into the bore until it makes one complete revolution.  Mark this spot, then measure the distance between your marks.  10" between marks means 1:10 twist, etc.  If you don't want to do that, and he is a newbie anyway, you would be safe with 55 gr. bullets.  All rifles will shoot them plenty well enough.  If you want to give him a thrill get some Sierra 55 gr. Blitzking bullets and shoot some gallon jugs filled with water.
