I have seen two tests of the new Springfield M1 in magazines.
Neither were favorable for various reasons. However, the faults described were probably due to some initial production difficulties, the kind that time and experience will sort out. That said, new Springfield is so much more expensive than a genuine ODCMP M1 that even if you were unlucky enough to receive a really marginal Garand from ODCMP, you could re-barrel (in .308 or .30-'06) and re-stock it, and still be money ahead. Frankly, even if assured that the new Springfield was perfect out of the box, I think I'd still pass on the new one. YMMV. |

I have one of the 500 with forget Breda receivers. The rest of the 10,000 is built with cast Australian Lithgow receivers. Paid $800 for mine, looks much better than the $500 CMP ones, has a brand new barrel and stock and shoots great. If you can live with an ugly, beat up "piece of history" CMP model, go for it, otherwise get a new one.

Springfield just started making them again with in the pat few months. I have one in my shop and it's selling for about $1K. Workmanship seems good, but I've not had the chance to fire one yet.

Hagar, I sincerely hope you're happy with your new rifle.
I've ordered two M1s from ODCMP. One was a 1965 arsenal re-build (a Springfield). It looked like it had just come from the factory, which, in fact, it had. The other was a very high number H&R. It, too, had seen little or no use. Other than replacing the walnut front handguard for a birch that matched the rest of the stock, it, too was like new. ODCMP mailed me the NEW HG, for free, and didn't even ask for the walnut one back. Was I lucky? A little probably. But not outrageously so, from what I've seen of other's rifles. |

Vass, Springfield is not the same Springfield that made the Garands for the military. These are purely aftermarket Garands and the reviews on them are mixed. Get a CMP original Garand.

Get a CMP Garand for $500, then let D.G.R. repark and refinish the wood and give it the once over for another $220 or so and you've got one fine looking Garand:
