Welcome to the site Mike PS anything and everything related to your question ,where to buy used(see EE), new see links infact if you'd spent 30 minutes looking for yourself you'd find posts just this week on which mags are better to use Sten or Uzi, where to get mag-blocks, a whole plethra of info, take some time stay a while and check the site out for yourself and you'll more than see what I'm typing about, your a newbie so don't hesitate to ask, but if wouldn't hurt to spend some browsing time either.

1911greg, it's like having another club in your bag. One lower w/ multible uppers, pistol caliber, long range 24", DDCM/CMP legal 20" or 14.5" - 16" CQB upper. All are possible and relatively quick to change from one to another.

Reason #1: Some indoor ranges (located conveniently close to home/work) allow only pistols or pistol caliber rifles.
Reason #2: shooting at steel plates is fun, but unsafe if you are not using a pistol caliber. I could go on, but that covers why I bought a 9mm upper. |

Isn't 9mm a little less anemic coming out of a 16" bbl? Also, it's a new firearm without the chance of getting screwed over by the NICS check. |

Yes, Since I have the other configurations, Now I want this one as well. Not to mention I try to keep within a two or three at the most calibers, so 9mm will fit in my collection just fine. And if for no other reason, "Why Not ?" I've been researching these and will get it soon. |

OK I see why you are going for a 9mm I don't go to indoor ranges very often so I forgot about the no rifle rule. I like having the 223 it seems like it can do anything that I need pretty good, home defense long range. and ammo is cheap.

I have an Olympic Arms 9mm and I love it! I have a SOCOM block so I can use cheap Sten mags ($4-$5 each). It is cheap and fun to shoot. I think I would prefer this over the .223 for home defense. I can't imagine the flash blindness and deafness that would come from shooting a .223. The 9mm MUCH quieter. As loud as a pistol, and you still need hearing protection, but much better!

Hey, Red_Dragon, can you show us a picture of that Olympic rig??? I've been considering one for myself and was curious about the fit and finish of the 9mm Olympic uppers.

I bought one of the .45 Oly uppers years ago, it's been 100% reliable, it's fun and it's quiet (especially with 230 grain's)
Don't have any pics, fit was decent with the DPMS lower, but finish was horrible. It's a stainless barrel with a thin black finish that they didn't seem to finish. It's not rub-marks, but it is possible to see the stainless "peeking" through the finish. Also, they take an anodized upper and cut it for the ejector system. This means you have exposed aluminum, nice and shiney and silvery. |

There are several places....The Equipment exchange....you will find Colt and Olympic Conversions offered there....You could get an Olympic from Olympic or Delton....or a Rock River Arms from RRA or Sableco. I'm sure there are many other dealers selling them also

Sorry I don't have a digital camera yet. But I can tell you that the fit and finish is excellent! I bought the full rifle from them, not just the upper (w/ ss bbl), and it has a better looking finish than my preban bushy (with the purplish tint). I wouldn't hesitate to buy another gun from Olympic Arms. If you get the 9mm, just get the SOCOM block and a bunch of Sten mags from TAPCO, and you won't be sorry! |

Probably for the same reason we have .22LR conversions. Pistol ammo is cheaper than rifle ammo in most cases. I can get 100 rounds of brand name FMJ 9mm retail for a lot cheaper than I can get 100 rounds of 5.56, and that's even buying steel cased russian rounds. 9mm averages around $.08-$.09/rnd. If you shoot full auto, 9mm is much easier on the budget. Remember the Alamo, and God Bless Texas... |

I think that cost difference should not be a motivator for a pistol upper. 9mm is cheap right now, 9 cents a round for good brass cased ammo; but the SA .223 battlepacks work out to just over .10 cents per round and work well. If cost is the issue, a Kuehl Precision .22LR is the way to go.
That's not to knock pistol uppers in any way; they are cool and for indoor ranges, may be your only option. |
