Hypothetically, if you were only able to have one gun, what would it be?

My AR-15. Now that sounds too easy being on an AR website but I have many guns and because of my military service I am more proficient and comfortable with my AR than any other gun I own.

Depends on the situation. Its a toss up between my AR carbine with light-weight barrel, or the Ruger 10/22. In a survival situation, I would probably take the 10/22 - light weight and the ammo is light-weight. I brick of 500 rounds of 22 LR is considerably lighter and more compact than 500 rounds of 5.56. The 22 won't be heard for miles when you fire it and it can take most small to medium sized game. And, with a .22 it is possible to obtain any other firearm a desperate situation may require.

Ruger # 1, single shot in 22 WRM. Open sights, plus a tang sight for over 100 yd shots. Keep in mind that I'm thinking of a survival type scenerio.
If it were a SHTF situation I'd take my Glock 22. Using it, I can take/obtain whatever else I need.

I would have to vote for my new favorite, the Benelli M1 Super 90 Tactical. I think it's the most versatile firearm I've got. I can use #9 shot to slugs.

If one gun has to be made to do EVERYTHING, then I would likely choose a .308 caliber bolt gun (Remington 700 short action or perhaps a Steyr Scout.)

It wouldn't be much use for birds, but could deal with just about everything else from rats to elephants (don't know why I'd need to shoot one, but it would work...)

I think it would be my 1911, if it were to be a pistol. My M1 if it were to be a rifle (probably barrel to 7.62, tho)

I second this excellent choice and at the same time I understand and feel sorry for all of you that are too puny to carry a real rifle and ammo!

I'd probably take an AR. 20" A2 barrel and "tactical" float tube. I'll take a .22 LR conversion kit along as well.

This is assuming I'm here in Southern California. If I lived up in Alaska, I'd probably want a .338 bolt gun . . .

Bushy 16" carbine, with standard A2 stock (for the cleaning kit) in the dissipator configuration preferably (full length sight radius and handguards) but not absolutely necessary.

I have the magazines, I know the weapon. It can take down light game and people. It is a shorty, so it does carbine duty, better for CQB and brush fighting than a full size battle rifle. More versatile than just a pistol, longer range than a shotgun.

It's also accurate with iron sights as far out as I care to shoot for any sane reason. As far as rifles go, the ammunition is light so I can carry a lot of it. The gas system contains very few moving parts (thus less to go wrong) and at the time of this writing, spare parts and ammunition are plentiful and cheap.

If any of the factors mentioned above, which were used in influencing my decision, were to change, then I would revaluate my choice.

Just saw the ONE the other day. A micro M4. Full auto M4 with an 8 inch barrel and ACOG. About the size of an UZI and can make a head shot at 100 yards. Also had an ambi mag release. An AWSOME little gun! There is a combo barrel weight/handguard so the recoil is very manageable.

One gun and one gun only?

It'd probably be an AK-103, or a FAL Para with a 16" or shorter barrel. Whichever I could get first, would win. I'd consider an AK-74M, but the 5.45x39 probably wouldn't function nearly as well on large game as 7.62x51 or 7.62x39...but, I could be wrong.

I think scram was meaning, if you could only OWN one gun what would it be. not the choice of one that you might take for different tasks just one period.
That is easy for me, my bushmaster(preban A2 20" gi 1:9). cos I don't hunt if i were a hunter than my choice would be different.
I wish i could live with just owning one but guns are like crack. I'm in a 12 step program!
and getting the size down to a manageable collection.

Depending on the situation

Survival: 22wrm on a scoped winchester lever w/see through sites. Reason accurate, powerfull enough for most game, ammo is almost as ligh as 22lr but distinctly more powerful.

SHTF 1 (rural or urban anarchy) M-16 or Ar-15.

SHTF 2 (requiring concealability in urban area) Glock 23

I like 22 WRM. Very versatile cartridge, excellent for a wilderness/survival scenerio.
Its all about shot placement...

I'll be different:

A S&W 686 .357 Mag revolver with a 6" barrel.

Good for anything up to whitetail (if I do my job) small enough to carry comfortably handsfree anywhere, good for CQ combat/self defense, ballpein hammer reliable. Not a SHTF gun, but if I'm limited to only one gun, ever, this is it.

I'm not sure he was asking for a SHTF type scenario. Along those lines, if I could only own one gun, it would have to be one of the following:

AR-15, any type. It's flexible and can be tailored to suit your needs. One gun, and a whole bunch of uppers.

A 1911. Parts and ammo are plentiful since they've been around forever.

Choosing between one is difficult, but I think it would ultimately be the 1911, as I'd want to be able to carry it for personal defense.

Now, for SHTF in my neck of the woods, I'd prefer to have a 10/22 and lots of ammo. I can't think of anything around where I live that couldn't be handled with a 10/22.

Fortunately, I am not limited to one gun, so I have as many as I can currently afford.

a 16" barrel in .223

a 20" SP1 in .22LR

a 16" in 9mm

a 24" varmit upper in .223

I can go on and on and on and on and on......................

Well, I would choose my HK USP .45 Tactical. good knockdown power, great accuracy for a handgun, silenced (could come in VERY hand) good ammo supply, easy to conceal/carry, etc.

If I had had my AR-10A2C longer, and knew I could trust it, and all my mags, I would prob. take that over the Tac. I also would want to surpress it though. I have one mag that it will not feed reliably from though, so I did not choose it. I have NEVER had ANY failure in the Tac, wether mag related or not. . . .

Springfield M1A,7.62X51,.308 is by far a better survival round,it is a better hunting round for deer sized game.This is my opinion though.Ya you can probably kill a buttload of squrrials and other edible critters with .22wmr or 5.56 but deer sized game can feed a family with one shot.
Surplus 7.62 is almost as cheap as 5.56.
