I thought I'd try a case of that AIM Surplus Yugoslavian 7.62 stuff from the 1970s.

- well, it looks and smells like it's been sitting in a Yugoslavian cave for the last 30 years.  The can is all corroded and it stinks like piss.  No wonder the UPS guy was holding his nose while walking the box up the driveway.

My friends and family just don't understand.

Ahhh, not so fast.

I put my hazmat suit on, grabbed the pull thingy and opened that sucker up:

The contents look real tasty.

Is it corrosive?  Is it reloadable?  Where did you buy it?

I got it here:

aimsurplus.com/acatalog/AIM_Rifle_Ammunition_8.html

It's supposedly non-corrosive, but it's probably Berdan primed making reloading difficult.  But for <8.5 cents/round delivered to my door, I don't care about reloading.

I just picked up 4 cases of the stuff packed on strippers and I am quite happy with it. I only have one case open and what I tried is some pretty hot loaded stuff. Someone also said that this is supposedly one of the few 7.62x39 rounds that will fragment. I am happy with it.

Here is some more useful info on this ammo for those that are curious.

Here's the headstamp from the cased ammo:

Does this mean 1980 production?  Corrosive?

I suppose that the chrome-lined SAR-1 should handle this without the barrel rusting away before I get home from the range.

Looks like you didn't get that '70s smell after all!!
You're back in the '80s now.....Disco is dead, New Wave arrives.....

I don't believe it would be corrosive.

Ahh, to be 20 years old again.

So, judging from some of the other discussions about the AIM surplus ammo, it looks like there are two types - 70s corrosive and 80s non-corrosive.  I guess that the 70s corrosive ammo is the stuff on the stripper clips and I got the non.  I'll still clean the gun when finished.

Better safe than fvcked!
I always clean within 24hrs of a day of shooting if not right when I walk in the door from the range.

DANG they have good prices there!  How does it shoot, SWS?  I may have to get some!

EDITED TO ADD:  What does "corrosive" and "non-corrisive" mean?  Does it mean it'll damage my barrel if I don't clean it immediately or something?  What makes it corrisive?

I didn't buy my from AIM but the stuff I picked up was the same and it shoots great. If I had the extra money I would buy even more of it.

The short answer is yes "corrosive" means that it will start to damage your rifle if left uncleaned. I guess I need to go and clean my rifle since it has been 2 weeks since I tried the ammo that came on stripper clips .
