I got into a discussion with FRIZ about rifles--he likes the 16" DSA Carbine I have over the full length rifle.

So, I thought I'd throw up a poll (since I'm bored at work right now).

AR-15s:  Do you like the longer barrel or the shorter barrel.

I also have a tendency to like the shorter barrel guns for their quicker handling.  I know you give up some velocity with the shorter barrel, but it definitely seems to handle better for me.

For target/precise shooting I like the 20", but its got Ray Vin weights so its like 16 lbs. or so, kind of heavy.  For plinking and general fun I like my 16" M4, its light and fast.

I voted 20". I don't need the 16 because I"m not planning on clearing any buildings. I want a rifle that has some 'reach' to it and the 20 does that better.

Didn't vote, cause I've got 'em both, and love 'em both.  Actually, I've got an SP1 set up as an XM177E2 clone, w/ an 11 1/2" barrel and a welded on duplicate of the original suppressor, a 20" heavy barrel in the A2 configuration, and am in the middle of building an M4gery w/a 16" barrel.  For punching holes in paper, definitely the 20", but for toting in the field, popping tin cans and such,  short barrel every time.  There's really no problem here----just get, or build, at least one of each

I really like my 16" AR carbines (bith of which are shorter than 16", and have fixed muzzle breaks to meet the length limits, 16.6" with a Mini-Y on one, 16.1" with a CavComp on the other).

That being said, a .308 like the FAL I prefer the longer barrel. The velocity difference between a 16: and a standard 21" is quite a bit, and when I handled your DSA at the BRC, it didn't seem to handle any better than my StG-58 with muzzle break (about a 23" OAL). The weight difference wasn't noticable.

For target shooting I like my 20", for plinking I like the carbine. Like someone else already said, get both

What's 'ya gonna do with it?

If you're looking for a weapon the 14.5-16" is about the best compromise between handling speed and velocity IMHO.

If you're looking for a target rig look at the 24" barrels to wring that last few dozen feet per second from the cartridge.

I had some in all sizes ...

If you have one --- 20".
If you have two --- 16" & 24".

I voted for the 20" because it is the "rifle".
16" is a "carbine" 'weapon' and 24" is a "target" 'shooter'.
Technically, the 20" is called a 'carbine', but in the general scheme of AR's, it's the 'rifle'.

I have both, well 1 is a 14.5" with phantom M4 all Bushmaster and a 20" Colt SP1, I would say my choice would be the carbine over the rifle due to size and weight differance. If I needed to be accurate at long distance I would take along my Remington LTR and throw my carbine over my shoulder for when they get close.
