Skeet67, I'm happy for you. Hopefully you're fortunate in that your front sight will be the correct height for zeroing-in.
If it's not, here's a fix:
If it's too tall, obtain another from Numrich or Sarco, plus its pin, and replace the original. File to suit so the rifle is OK at 200 yds, the minimum distance on the rear sight scale.
Too short? Hmmm... might try the above vendors for a taller one. The blade has a small letter on its side, corresponding to its height. Ask at
www.jouster.com for help in determining what height (letter) you need.
OR, do what the Marines did.
In the inter-war years, Marine shooting teams modified the '03 in a number of ways, including the sights.
They replaced the front sight blade with one about twice the thickness of the original (at the same time milling the slot in the front sight base to suit). You might buy a spare front sight base, and have your gunsmith fabricate a wider, too-tall blade that you can file down till it's perfect.
One other thing: the Army-style front sight protector is WAY too small, and crowds the front sight blade. Unusable. The USMC protector has a MUCH wider "globe" that you can actually see through and use. Hard to find, but an excellent accessory to guard that fragile, unprotected front sight. Hope this helps.
IIRC, Roy Dunlap in "Ordnance Went Up Front" cites a bent/destroyed front sight blade as being the most common '03 Springfield combat malady.
At any rate, I hope you enjoy shooting your piece of history.
