Ready to get a long range precision rifle and wanted everyone's opinion on the 308 and 338 lapua cartridges. The distance shot will be 300-1000yds. depending on where I shoot it!! I know and understand the difference in cost for the ammo, ballistics and the like!! Just wanting opinions and comments!!

I have them both and love them.

If money is not the object, go for the .338 Lapua.

Maybe consider the .300 WinMag against the .338 Laupa ?? (Instead of the .308 which is really about a 600-700 yard round. I know there's someone here that shoots .001 inch groups at six miles with the .308 but I can't.)

The new ArmaLite AR-30 bolt-gun is coming in .308, .300 WinMag and .338 Laupa. After waffling around for weeks I finally ordered the .300WinMag as I already owned a group of .308's and decided the .300 WinMag was the best balance for distance vs. shooting costs. Besides the longest range available to me is 1000 yards.

Where in Oklahoma is a 1000 yard range? I would love to shoot at one, but I've never had the chance.

Hey if you can afford the .338 lapua, go for it. It hurts though. I shot a Sako Trg 42 the other day, and well, kinda left me rubbing my shoulder. I doubt i could shoot that gun all day, unless it had a proper muzzlebreak.
For a 1000 yd shot? I heard the .338 is damn hell stable.

Oklahoma City Gun Club I'm told. I've just become a member so I haven't used it yet - also haven't had a rifle that would accurately reach that distance.

you're much man if you shoot .338 without a break !! (I had the TRG-41 in .338 but 'with' a break.)

I live in Edmond and have thought about joining. How much is the membership annually? I've also heard they don't allow full autos. Is this true?

No full autos is correct. The initial fee is $180.00 but I think the continuing yearly fee is only about $90.00. If you're interested get on the list now as I believe they only bring in new members once/year.

Not many Marines can shoot their '16 at 1000....damn sure not with M855 or (laugh) M193. Take 80 grains through a Douglas barrel and you're looking at hitting a 12" by 12" target. But anything off the rack won't scratch paper...Marine or not.

AS far as the Marine Corps Rifle Team shooting M16's at 1000m, this is true, but they are using some very hot loads, with 68gr or 80gr bullets (last I heard). The brass is not something you would want to reload. The primers are flattened, and they look like they are just this side of failure.

Yea, like i said, it really hurt. My buddy had the TRG-42 with the threaded barrel option. He was gonna get a can for it, but was being a lazy ass and never bothered (so far). When he brought that puppy to the range, i looked at it, and just HAD to shoot, it brake or no brake. Thankfully, i really braced myself before pulling (wasnt really worried about aim as much)and bam, nearly knocked myself off the seat. Painful it is....but i doubt not as bad as those safari elephant guns.

Gunsmithdude The TRG42 is exactly what I was looking at purchasing...Yes, with a muzzlebrake.
I've been saving up for this and will put a Nightforce 8x-32x on it. Really wanting something for long range accuracy. The range where I typically shoot will not allow 50's or SMG's unfourtunately!! so I am looking at a couple of military ranges where civilians are allowed. I currently have 308's in hunting rifles but none that would be considered a long range precision rifle.
