I remember seeing one loooooong ago

Maybe it was a 6420

Yes, Colt did make a "Colt Carbine". I've seen one in person. It was black and beautiful and it had no other name markings like "Sporter".

To my knowledge they were 6420 or 6520 type carbines.

You could try the Colt forum in the "Industry Forums" section and ask the Colt experts (like Stokes) for detailed info.

I have a 6520 GC already and an SP1 CAR

NOW I want the 6420 w/ that marking if it is available

It is what came between the two I have as far as Colt "CARs" go. I also believe it is the 6420

I looked at biggerhammer.net and they list the Colt Carbine as a R6520 variant. Serial number prefix is CC and prebans are CC001616 and under.

If you can find one, you should buy one.

Mine is in the 12XX range.

Do a search on "Colt Carbine" and you will find some info that Stokes was good enough to track down regarding the history of these rarities.

B.Game, I did a quick check on the 6420 and find........ not much.

This carbine was introduced in 1985 and has a standard weight barrel. Model was only made from 1985 - 1987.

Looks as if the model 6420 came after the 6001 (disc. 1985) and before the 6520 ( introduced in 1988).

Just for a rough, very rough pricing guide excellent condition seems to be be about $1300 -$1500.

Price in the $1300-$1500 range for a Colt Carbine? I don't think so. There were only 1616 of this model made vs 18500 GCs made. They are more than 10X more rare. Bet you a doughnut you won't find a seller for near that amount... if he knows what he has. Or, put another way... you find me ten exc cond Colt Carbines and I will pay you $13,000 on the spot. My guess is I would make an EASY $1000 profit per rifle. They have to be worth more than Gov Carbines.

The model number for the Colt Carbine is not 6420. It's R6520. The GC is 6520. This is according to info compiled by Stokes. It would appear that folks mistakenly use the R for the Gov Carbine when it is for the Colt Carbine instead.

Criley, What does it say on your receiver? What caliber is it?

Only about 300 of the 1600ish Colt Carbines made it into civilian hands.
Most of them were configured like the R6520, but some were configured like the R6530.
Serial numbers begin with "CC" on all.

On a side note:
The R6420 was the updated/replacement for the R6001 (SP1 Carbine). It had A1 sights.
The R6520 was the A2 Carbine.
The R6530 was the Sporter Lightweight, an A2 carbine with full stock and no lug.
The "R" was just part of the product code to identify AR15s, similar to "O"s being for 1911s and "P"s for SAAs. Colt changed the "R" code to "MT" for Postban rifles, except for LEO guns which became "AR".

I'm not sure why everything must be attacked but no matter.

My source, other than many years of collecting, is the "2002 Standard Catalog of Firearms, The Collector's Price & Reference Guide, 12th (and latest) Edition."

I got my Blue lable GC NIB for $900 almost 2yrs ago and got my LNIB SP1 CAR 6001 in trade for a POST ban AK..........hehe

Deals CAN and will be had if you are lucky enough.

I agree that the chances of encountering this rifle are slim, but most people just don't know what they have.

There is one waiting for me in someones safe or closet. You gots to think positive man....8^)

About two months ago I made a call for a friend who needed a part and in the course of the conversation found the guy I was speaking with had an ArmaLite AR-17 -Black (12 gauge shotgun) New-In-the-Box - serial number 00046. Only 200 of these guns were ever made (in black) and none since 1965. To the best of my (and ArmaLite's knowledge) this is the only surviving NIB, Black AR-17. I could barely bring myself to ask what he wanted for the gun but finally sucked it up and asked - answer was $900 - I didn't have the guts to ask if shipping was included but asked if $925.00 total would do the trick - yes.
(This shotgun is heading for the ArmaLite museum next week.)

there were 1200* of the Gold AR-17's manufactured. Last made also in 1965. Most of the literature will state 2000 were made but that information is not accurate. ArmaLite actually marketed this as the "Golden Gun".
From a collector viewpoint the AR-17 Gold is pretty desirable if NIB or LNIB.

For those of you not familiar, the AR-17 was a semi-auto, 12 gauge with a 'one' shot magazine. That's right - one in the chamber and one in the mag. Why ? Because it was designed as a skeet (and field) gun. The guns were shipped with three chokes and a small choke wrench to allow ease of choke changes in the field.

The AR-17 manual alone is probably worth about $100.00 - maybe more. I know of only five surviving manuals.

*There is some confusion as to whether the total AR-17's manufactured was 1200 gold plus 200 black for a total of 1400 or whether the numbers were 1000 gold and 200 black for a total of 1200. Personally, I believe the total gold and black manufactured was 1200.

You have a real "Colt Carbine" enroute AFAIK from the pics you had me post.

Also the 6420 is not the above "Carbine", the above Carbine is an R6520 I think.

I HAVE seen a Sporter II marked "Carbine" but much smaller letters and lower on the receiver.

Colt are Crazy...that is why I love them

YES...!! i do have a REAL Colt Carbine on a UPS truck somewhere in the USofA, YES...! again my Carbine IS the only original "Colt Carbine"..., there is NO such thyng as a 6420 Carbine, so stop looking for one, i am calling Colt tomorrow about Stokes' S/N, but according to a 20+ year Colt collector & having over 500 Colts pass thru his hands every year, he says that Stokes' AR-15 is a 6520 w/6420 upper, or a similar upper which is an A1............

i wrote Stokes for more info but he is away fishing or somthyng till after the 30th......

oooooooooh, i found a VN comm. Colt AR-15..., made an offer & invited the man to visit us here.....

I have a cheesy question for you Colt heads. I have a 16" A-1 pre ban Colt that I built on a stripped upper. I did check the old site to make sure it was a preban and built as a complete gun. It left Colt as an AR15 9mm Sporter. It was owned by someone who moved to Kali and he rebuilt the gun with a pinned stock and soldered muzzle break on a post ban reciever so he could keep it(or something like that). Serial number is TA08XXX. The thing that I wonder about with this one, is that while all the Colt rifles I see posted on this site have the Circle and Pony, this one had the Colt(tm) snake logo stamped on it, below that "AR15", and below that, "9MM CARBINE". Is this a rarity? I couldn't be that lucky, but any of you know what the history or sequence of the markings are?

I HAVE seen w/ these TWO eyes (approx 2yrs ago) a rifle at WestOFPecos Gun Shop that had "Sporter II" and then had "Carbine" on it as well.

THe lettering was about the same size as the seriel #s

This I have seen w/ my own eyes.

I guess I should have bought it when I had the chance, but I was not a beleiver then

. I was still one of the unwashed.
