What is the difference between an A1, A2, and A3?

?? – I wouldn’t have thought the A1 would have the shell deflector lug.

Also, I believe there are some differences (that escape me at the moment) between the AR-15 and M16 versions of at least the A-3 designation.

Maybe I'm just making things too complicated!

Technically, there is NO SUCH THING as an "A3" upper, because the M16A3 uses the same upper receiver as the M16A2. The M16A4 uses the flattop, so it would be more correct to call a flattop an A4 upper.

However, before the M16A4 was officially adopted, manufacturers needed to call a flattop something, so they called it the A3, since it was the next number after A2.

Don't get too hung up on the marketing names; just make sure you get what you want.

The differance between the A3 and A4, is the A3 has a 3 round burst and the A4 is full-auto.

Dont forget that some of the earliest "A1" mods had NO fwd assist (which is useless I find).
The next time I need the fwd assist on my SP-1 CAR will be the first time. I hear of them being needed but I never have and though I may not shoot as much as a lot of guys I have put close to 5k thru this one I think. Not a burp.

The M-16 has no forward assist, the M-16A1 has a forward assist. The former is the airforce rifle, they did not see a need for the forward assist, and the army would not take it with out one.

AND..., i'll add this:

if you never used your forward assist..., you ain't shootin an AR-15 !!!!!

i guess it's just a habbit, but i ALWAYS push on mine after releasing the open action on a live round

And i'll add, Don't ever use the FA. unless you want a disabled weapon. Get rid of any round that fails to chamber never cram it in. If you want to quietly chamber a Rd. your thumb makes a better cartridge assist. I speak from experience Dont Push a BAD Rd. in the Chamber

I agree 100% with Armson-oeg the fwd. asst. is all but useless for his stated reasons.

huh,, I wonder what im shooting then? Seems the rifle I shoot has never needed any kind of fwd asst. The only jam its ever had was when I didnt seat a mag all the way and a fwd assist would have been of no use.
Just aout curiosity if fwd assist is so necessary why is there no other rifle in world that has it? I dont think there is but I could be wrong.
I guess I opened the can of worms on the old fwd assist thing.
