I am thinking about getting a friend a pistol for a wedding gift.
He has a distaste for plastic pistols so any Glocks's, P99's and USP's are out of the running. In the autoloader catagory I naorrowed it doen to a P220 and a 1911 (SA or Kimber).

I wanted to consider a nice 4" or 5" .357 revolver and wanted to ask for inputs on what models. Personally; I always wanted a Python but, I'm not that generious.

Please offer your .357 revolver suggestions.

Can't go wrong with a S&W revolver. I'd get him a Model 13 or 15.

Ruger GP100 with 4 inch barrel.

A S&W 686 for an especially good friend.

S&W M686 or M66. Just about any other S&W .357 Mag. will do. Second I'd choose the Ruger

Based on your friend's distaste for the plastic guns, I recommend the Ruger KGP-161.
My reasoning is that he obviously likes heavy metal that is well engineered, and the Ruger 6" full underlug stainless version of this medium-large frame .357 fills the bill.
Mine is the polished (shiny) version with the designator of GKGP-161.
The 6" bbl. takes full advantage of the 158-gr. ammo the .357 was designed to shoot.
The gun is super strong.
Throw in a nice wood Hogue grip and some premium ammo and your friend will be happy...

Find him a used Dan Wesson. I found one by accident at the gunstore one day used but looked like brand new. It has the absolute best trigger of any gun I haved owned.

Four inch L frame Smith and Wesson. Go for the Model 686 (stainless). You can also get that in seven shot. This will be one he will use a lot and have a lot of fun with. I like 1911A1s, but have my share of Smith 357's.

S&W 686 with a six inch barrel. I have one and it is my favorite gun period. I don't know why but I just love it, maybe it is the heavy feel, or the accuracy, I don't know but it just kind of makes anyone who holds it feel kind of manly. There are many other fine revolvers out there, but there is something kind of special about a Smith, the ruger always feel freat in my hand, but in the end it is the 686 that I carry to the range.

I really like my Performance Center 627 38/357 8 shot that came set up for moon clips. Nice gun!

I would go with a S&W of one type or another. I would smile from ear to ear though if given either a 686, 66 or 19 model revolver. You can get a good, used stainless model 66 for about $325 or maybe less depending on where you are. All 3 models are nice, sturdy pistols.

Yea, I'll have a hard time wrapping a 5" SS 686 as a gift. Maybe I'll buy it and then send the new groom a toaster.

686 4" is a great all around wheelgun. Load it with .38 and let the wife have a ball too.

I agree with BusMaster.

When I was looking for a wheelgun I went the the exact GP-100 he has described. I prefer the cylinder release on the Rugers over the Smiths. But that is just my personal preference.

So add one more vote for the Ruger.

Another vote for the S&W 686. Mine's a 686-4. Here in Phoenix they go for $489.00 NIB. I got mine, like new, from a pawnshop for $300.00. Still had the case it came in and the manual. Looked like whoever owned it before me shot a box or two through it and then got short of cash and pawned it. His bad luck=my good fortune.

I'll agree with the majority. Smith 686. Its the cats ass. It'll fire anything you put through it. I'm looking for one for myself

i don't care what you go with (though i'm partial to the ruger or taurus, still can't find it in myself to embrace S&W), just make damn sure you're not making a straw purchase.

i know it's a fine line, but technically you ARE buying a gun for someone else. make sure you're aware of that.

here's how we solve that little problem (and you may be ahead of me already, if so, i apologize, i just don't wanna see anyone get into any trouble for an innocent mistake because of assinine laws): take him to purchase it and have HIM fill out the 4473 form. it doesn't matter where the money comes from as long as his name is associated with the purchase. stupid, i know, but it's closer to legal than buying it yourself and then handing it over. of course, if he purchased it for a nominal consideration (say, fair market price of one dollah!, that would be perfectly legal too!

Just took my new S&W 4" 686 to the range today. It was extremely accurate (like most of the Smiths I've shot) and had almost no recoil. The revolver I bought actually had a trigger job done to it already as it was used, but the factory triggers on Smiths are generally pretty good. The 686 is just about the finest looking revolver out there. I wouls say that it is even more visually appealing than the Python.

Mine was $400 with a nice holster and a couple speedloaders, plus a really sweet trigger job.
