Because there was no reason to keep two different designs in the system.
The Army wanted the birdcage because jungle vegitation would catch in the open tines of the 3 prong and Colt switched the SP1 to use the same components. Simple business economics. That's all. edited to say; Maybe I should be awake enough to read a question BEFORE I respond. I swear last night I read "Why did Colt..."
