Don't know about the SP-1's, but I think the M16A1 came out in 1966, which had the full cage flash hider.

I was in VN from July 1969 to Sept. 1970. We started out with the 3 prong and switched sometime during my time there. Can't remember when exactly.

IIRC because the open prongs of the flash hider would get catch on brush and snag all kinds of stuff. The closed birdcage style elminated that.

I am not sure either, but mine was made in 1972 and it has the birdcage style.
