i need an AK.
i have as many ar's as i can shoot for now, and i know DICK about AK's, would some of the more AKeducated give me some advice? i don't want to spend more than 500.00.
if i go the local gunshops, they'll just talk up whatever they happen to be selling at the time.

You can easily get an AK for around $300.  I have tried a few but love my MAK() the best.  It has a very smooth trigger and the finish is better than most.  VEPR are also very nice but I do not consider them a true AK.

AK's come in three chamberings, 7.62x39 is the original followed by the 5.45 and finally a few come in .223rem.  I have a .223 MAK90 and mags are very hard to come by, but it is a more accurate round.  7.62 mags are very cheap and plentiful.

Look for a guy named Campybob on this board, he probable knows more about AK's than anyone else here.

I have seen a few NIB Norinco MAK90s for $399

If your looking for a good used one, you might find a used milled SLR### or SRC### for $550

edited to add: CB will steer you in the right direction, and correct spelling

I bought a Romanian SAR-1 (7.63x39) today for $325.  It came with a 40rnd and a 10 rnd mag, a sling, and cleaning kit.  (also has the 5 U.S. parts kit to make the pistol grip legal)

It RULES!

For under $500, Campy would probably tell you to go with a Romanian SAR-1. You can get a case of ammo (1000 rounds), some 30 round mags and the gun itself for under $500. You can modify it later by putting on a nice stock, refinishing it, adding a scope and even replacing the trigger with one from Red Star Arms.

Go over to the AK forum and check out the Romanian section.

I LIKED my SAR-1, bought it for $350 a while ago with mags and sling, just sold it to finance my Preban Colt

Just got my 2001 SAR-1. There is a guy on gunbroker who sells a ton of them.. just do a search for ak and he ahs almost all the top auctions.

Anyways. The sights were not canted and accurate, no triger slap and the wood was in great shape. $359 delivered with 3 40rd mags and one 10 rd mag. Reliable as hell and fun to shoot.

Edited to add I had 2 30rd mags and they were a little nicer to use than the 40rdrs.
