when shooting a pistol or rifle whats the best way to control your breathing I usually take a deep breath then exhale then pull the trigger? how should I be doing it?

That is the way I do it.
The problem is that you don’t have air in you lungs migrating to the blood steam so you have a time window  of just a few seconds.

If you hold a full breath you are not relaxed during the shot.

The volume of a partial breath cannot be duplicated.  So you may push the rifle.

Or as I was tought, Inhale, Exhale, 1/1000,2/1000, Pull the trigger.  That should put the trigger pull between two heartbeats and your rifle should be settled. That is standing up. Benchrest isn't so much a factor.

But the intent is to not be moving, and the space between heartbeats.

                                        That`s how I do it...some say hold breath...that don`t work for me...slow relaxing exhale...
