The only parts necessary to covert an AR-15 from 5.56 to 7.62x39 are the barrel, bolt, and extractor. Colt also used an un-indexed elevation wheel for their A2 sights. Everything else is identical.
True, buying an AK would be cheaper, but it would also be less accurate and not enjoy the ergonomics and user friendliness engineered into the AR-15. Complete Colt uppers appear in the Part For Sale forum from time to time. They tend to run in $400-$475 range. |

Will 5.56 mags work as well? If so, I might just have found my next project. Hell, I might eventually cover the costs in ammo savings. |

Yes, can use standard USGI magazines. The original Colt 7.62x39 5 round magazines were noting more than a USGI 20 round mag with an internal block limiting their capacity to 5 rounds. The only catch with using 7.62x39 in USGI mags is that they will only reliably feed 6-7 rounds. This is due to the more extreme taper of the 7.62x39 cartridge. If one is interested in 7.62x39 AR-15s, I would recommend they invest in some of the aftermarket magazines as well. There has been much discussion about them in the past. A search of the magazine forum on the subject should yield the appropriate information. |

If you're into Class3, NO its not cheaper to buy an AK. A transferrable AK is around $6,000. While another upper for your registered M16 is around $400. Here are a couple of my setups in 7.62x39. Both run 100% in FULL AUTO. Plenty fun and a lot cheaper than 223. Yes, you have to play with the mags but it is possible to get it running.

Also forgot to mention. In addition to DPMS, Model 1 Sales has just announced having 7.62x39 "kits" and parts. I didn't see any mention of mags though.
