Just curious what type/brand of bullets you guys use for CC, nightstand gun, and/or your defense shotgun.Also, if you use different types in the same mag, what order are they in ?

Those would be Winchester Ranger SXT's now.

What I carry depends:

USP45: .45 Super Tactical from Texas Ammunition. It's a 230gr JHP-XTP

Glock 33: 125gr Gold Dot

USPc .40: Mixture of 155gr and 165gr Fed. Hydrashok

USPc 9mm: 124gr +P+ Fed. Hydrashok

Keltec P32: 60gr Gold Dot

870: Mixture of Brennekke slugs and 00 buck

Bushy: SA 55gr

sig239 9mm & taurus85 38sp both have 125 gr cor-bon (the sig alternates between hp and 124 gr federal fmj)

1911- w/ 3 wilson Mags or Winchester .45 SXT (Cause there purdy), And 10 cheap mags w/ FMJ

AR- 360rnds of Winchester Q3131A loaded and another 140 on strippers.

Kimber Custom Eclipse or Colt Officers ACP with 230 gr. FMJ. Because FMJ is more reliable than HPs. 45 because it doesn't have to expand to make a big permanent cavity. 230 grain to ensure penetration to vitals. And just as important, less expensive so I can practice more with what I carry. This results in increased safety, speed and shot placement.

Nightstand gun: Sig 299/.357SIG with MagSafe ammo. It clocked out at 2200 feet per second.

I live in an apartment building so no FMJ or 12ga. slugs due to the paper thin walls here.

I think the RBCD stuff is worth a look, it comes highly recommended by some TX CHL instructors. Low risk of over-penetration.

Let's see...

USP 45C: Federal Hydra-Shok (230 gr)
or
Speer Gold Dot (185gr)

Depends on my mood for which one, really. Both seem to shoot the same for me, as I can hit point of aim with either load.

Always in "round chambered, hammer down, safety off" mode - I guess traditional DA carry.

Always with at least one backup mag.

Always in a holster.

Winchester 180's, but I will switch back to 165's as they shoot 4" high at 25 yrds where as it is point of aim for 165's. I use a Walther P99.

mayday, I would be as concerned about overpenetraition from that 357 Sig as I would a slug. Any of these rounds are going to go through walls.

I'm still not sure what to think of this ammo. From what I gather, it sounds like the "Nosler Partition" of self-defense ammo. I think their bullets are of "duplex" construction, with a chunk that blows up, and another chunk that penetrates.

He's using a pre-fragmented round from MagSafe, designed for minimal penetration.

My only complaint about such a round would be that it may not penetrate sufficiently to stop an aggressor.

In .40 I've got 180gr Triton Quick-Shoks or 180gr Federal Hydra-shocks. Till right now I never noticed I seem to have a penchant for 'Shock' ammo.

00 buck in the scattergun, with slugs in reserve. I own a house with no kids, so I'll shoot through walls if I have to.

Have you ever noticed that theses guys use clay to simulate how their bullet reacts to flesh? Why don't they use gel like everybody else? I have a feeling that these rounds won't do nearly as well as a hollowpoint will, and I wouldn't pay the $20 or so they ask for 10 rounds.

First of all, I test all my defensive ammo before I carry it. Testing 200 rounds of those things would make me go broke.

Second of all, I don't think I'll be needing to kill Gumby anytime soon.

In .40, which is most of my guns, I use Georgia Arms Shear Power 165 gr. They lable it as "+p" but that's just hype. There's no such thing per SAAMI, and it's within SAAMI specs. I can't say/don't know about their "+p+". Anyway, they use a Gold Dot bullet, put out a quality product, and you can afford to practice with your carry ammo. I used to be a 155 gr man, but the 165 does better after barriers. Bigger cavity, less likely to clog.

Great idea! I never considered having a beanbag as my first round... That would do nothing but help your case if you ever had to use the shotgun defensively. Where'd you get the ammo, and how much did it cost?

It's a good question that I've wrestled with for a while. I like to think I've come up with a good compromise solution. Yes, I am concerned about the potential legal aftermath. If my first shot is recognized as a less than lethal round, it's harder for an attorney to paint me as a blood thirsty killer, ad nauseum.

Of course, I recognize I'm risking a reduction in tactical effectiveness. How much? Well, how fast can I put rounds through a shotgun when I need to? I've practiced a healthy amount with this (as I believe all of us should) and I'm reasonably comfortable with my abilities. At the very least, a bean bag round will slow my target down giving me a little extra time to determine whether a follow up shot is necessary.

If it becomes a SHTF situation and I'm worried about roving bands of marauders, I'll ditch the beanbag, but for now...

As I said above, it's a compromise. YMMV. I actually got the ammo from a friend who is in law enforcement so I can't say how much it cost him. I've seen things like it in various catalogs (www.firequest.com, for example) and it's pretty damn expensive -- along the lines of $30 for a sleeve of 5 rounds.

The thing is, after I initally tested several rounds through the Mossberg, I haven't fired any more so it's not a major ongoing cost.

I cannot beleive no one on this board has said it yet-

But if you're just carrying "bullets" for CCW, you're gonna have a problem when it comes time to shoot someone!

No case, primer or power makes your bullet alone kinda harmless

I personally carry 'cartridges'-and mid-weight +P Hydrashoks get my vote in 9mm and .45
