I think I might have one of these "Barney Bushies"!! So what's the story with them? Why did Bushmaster finish these lowers differently?

Bushmaster finishes aluminum AR parts by Hard Coat Anodizing them, per Mil-Spec. The color comes from the dye added during this process (that's how JP Enterprises and the paintball gun companies do all those colors). Black is the most difficult color to make, and very minor changes in temperature, metal alloy, and other factors can determine how well the dye works.
During periods of high production (preceeding the '94 Ban and Y2K), some of the parts ended up with a purplish tint, especially noticable when oiled. This is merely cosmetic. Though purple parts have shown up occasionally from all of the AR manufacturers (yes, including Colt), Bushmasters had far more examples of this problem than anyone else. -Troy |

I have a gray lower from 1989. I 'd like to find a gray A2 upper, although that would be like finding a hen's tooth. Any value on the gray ones?

Here's a purple one - oh wait! No, it just looks purple in the pic. This is what it WOULD look like if it were really purple though (it's black as can be in person).

I've been thinking about sending it to DPMS, they can re-anodize them for about $45
