Folks,
Much of the input in this thread is not necessarily relevant to the two specific loads mentioned. For example, the window penetration data came from a study of a different caliber, and can't be assumed to apply here. I'm not beating up on anyone, I'm just trying to help answer the original question.
DrEvil,
As several have mentioned, both are excellent, top-tier rounds. Performance will be within a percentage point or two either way. The Hydra-Shoks are loaded a bit hotter, giving them more velocity/energy, but also more muzzle flash. The Hydra-Shok bullet design generally will expand more reliably due to the center post, but both designs are known for their reliability. Both are "3rd Generation" hollow-point designs (the 9BPLE is a 2nd Gen, as is the Silver Tip), which have proven to be very reliable.
Personally, I would test a box of each load in my pistol for accuracy. If there isn't a significant accuracy difference, and you don't have a preference, I'd go with the Hydra-Shok, simply for the slight additional velocity. That is unless I got a really good deal on the Gold Dots.
FWIW, I have some of both loads. :)
