After reading about people pulling the cables to get them to come off I just want to point out that the connector has a little slider that you depress to seat it and remove it.  There should be no force required to install and uninstall the cable.

There are at least two generations of connector, you have the nicer one with a latch.

Probably not very helpful but I ended up getting a new PVS-31 battery pack and splitter cable. My COTI is paired with a PVS-14 so the -31 lead is just stowed out of the way. Haven’t yet routed the COTI lead, just checking routing options now.

My COTI only battery pack does not have a connection like that, unfortunately.

Do you have the PVS-31/COTI dual lead pack or the COTI only one?

Same here. I’ve fiddled with the manual settings a good bit and believe I’ve found a happy medium but I’m pretty sure I’ll be fiddling with them a bit more. I’ve only started to explore “Offset”.

Thermal is something you'll have to fine tune each time you use it.  Sometimes several times a night depending on conditions.

One thing I’m trying right now is focusing my PVS-14 on a patch of ground 10’ to 15’ ahead of me while relying on the COTI to pick up potential heat sign at further distance. My idea is though objects and details are slightly blurry at further distances, I can still translate what my aided eye is observing and fill in the blank(s) - a tree is a tree, a fence line is a fence line, a car is a car, a shit house is a shit house...and so on and so forth and yet have more near field details available with focus set nearer to me.

Interesting concept but I use my nod for driving so.i need high visual horizon. Your idea might work well for more heavy woods stalking

Any idea why I have a line going through the lower 3rd of the COTI image?  It's present on all modes but most noticable on full thermal.

I was doing a good amount of night shooting tonight in about 35 degree weather, no IR laser or illuminator was shined directly in to it (or even close) but there were a couple on the range.  Can IR illuminator reflection off the grass below us possibly mess with a COTI?  NODs I was using are fine, no temporary burn in or anything, its just the COTI.  Did about 1.5-2 hours of shooting tonight and only noticed it at the end, and since I've been inside for about a half an hour, the line is still there.

Any ideas?

ETA:

it is straight across the entire image, perfectly straight line....really doubt this has to do with any user-induced stuff since it affects the entire row of pixels (pixels may not be the right word).  I also reset it to factory settings, did not help.

Always put the cover on before calibrating it. If not it'll "burn in" what ever image it sees. No big deal if that happens, just cover and calibrate again.

You just push and hold in the "power knob" for a few seconds

I calibrate mine frequently

If there is no clouds I have found you can also look at a clear sky to calibrate

Have you had any luck playing with the manuel gain etc settings yet to get a better thermal picture? I feel like I really need to do this as I cannot get a human or life form yet to stand out yet versus the thermal noise of trees, curbs, etc. environmental stuff regardless of brightness setting.

I use the factory defaults in outline mode. I pick out small critters easily in tree lines by turning the Coti brightness down until there’s little noise. I’m in a very dark humid area and routinely see raccoons, opossum, armadillos, etc well before I can see them with night vision.   In our greenfields deer show up well over 200 yards.

Mine does do better on the factory autogain setting when its warmer out. When it gets about 40 and below I have to manually set it or its crap for detection.

Also, I’ve noticed turning the unit off then back on again followed by a calibration can help whenever I’m making adjustments to the settings.

I haven't had much time playing with it, but this last weekend, it was cold and when I selected the Arctic mode, it really reduced the clutter. However, I didn't see anything. I have not messed with the gain yet.

Has anyone taken photos with their unit yet? Kinda neat, but not sure if you can export them.

Yep. Included a few photos and videos on a prior thread here - https://www.ar15.com/forums/armory/Optics-1-Pas-29-COTI-any-user-feedback-/18-509367/#i5277026

For some reason posting external links to my photography seems to be forbidden... but if you go to my name dot com and click prints/downloads, it'll take you to galleries of shots I've done at classes where many of them are taken with the COTI attached as well. Check out the OH Night Shoot from Feb 2020 and TNVC course from Sep 2019 for a few.

I generally only use mine in the woods so thats all I can comment on

I use the auto settings for the most part. While yes I get clutter here and there living things have always really popped out

Right about when I wonder if mine is having problems ill see a racoon or possum up in a tree staring back. With the heat of a animal or person background clutter usually gets auto gained down automatically basically just making the animal/person lit up with no noise if that makes sense

But as far as seeing through foliage it doesn't really do that. So has to have direct line of sight for the most part

I took this series of images at the Ohio NVG group this past weekend. The picture with the COTI was taken about 10 seconds after the picture without. The quality of these photos isn't what I saw with my eye, as I was juggling the NVG and my 5 year old phone with a busted autofocus. I could see the shooter and his escort without the COTI, but only if they were moving. It was maybe 45 degrees at this point, and I had the COTI's brightness knob a little more than halfway.

Anyone have any ideas on how to make my COTI work better?

I got a great chance to play with it Fri night. It was roughly 35* and I did some hiking/hunting. My coti would pick up trees and clouds, but not the Great Horned Owls at 10' or 50yds, a possum at 25yds or the rabbits at 5 feet and 30 feet.

I tried all the different environment settings and calibrated between each setting change.

Wouldn't the COTI be able to pick up thermal signatures better on a cold and dry night?

I need some learning here.

I posted this in the OMFG NV thread, but figured I'd ask here too.

Just to eliminate the obvious, was the cap off?

It should have definitely picked them up especially cycling through different settings.

Yep. It sure was. I would cycle to a different setting, calibrate then look around. It would pick up clouds and random grass but not the rabbit 20' away. It was completely dark and fairly cold.

I learned to make an adjustment, turn it off and on, and then calibrate. It’s a tedious few minutes but once I’ve found a setting to my satisfaction I can go about my business walking around the property.

I had a similar experience the other night. I will go into manual setting and optimize my coti so I can see raccoons in the trees. The next night I was out i couldn’t pick up anything. I switched it to auto and nothing changed.  I then toggled through full/parol/outline and it switched over. Not sure but it was kinda suck in one setting and switching modes help unfreeze it. Rabbits should stand out quite well. Owls on the other hand have excellent insulation and some can be quite difficult with thermal. Not sure about a great horned.

I should have added this as well, on the above, I was using outline. On Full thermal, it worked just fine.  But now I can't remember if I was doing black hot or white hot.  Maybe I need some more time playing with it and the settings.

The GHO, flew at my caller when I had a rabbit distress going. It swooped down, but broke off and went over my head and sat up above me on a center pivot irrigation I was at. I turned and looked at him and he looked at me hard. He was very puzzled.

It should have definitely picked up a possum or a rabbit. I'm usually able to detect a possum sized animal at 100+ yards at a minimum. Did you make sure you had the lens cap on when you did your NUC? Make sure its not on the pulse mode as well.

edit- oh and black hot is garbage in any mode but full thermal

So I own a COTI and believe at the $3K price point it has true value for overland movement.  I did get to spend two nights last week in Advanced NV CQB Class running the ECOTI to determine if it was worth me upgrading.  At this point the answer for me is no.
While the resolution is twice a good in thermal modes than the COTI I cant justify the additional cost for the features that personally don't serve me.  The COTI is much more intuitive and easier to run.  The large rotating adjustment knob a plus on the COTI
over the very small rubber covered buttons on the ECOTI.  With gloved hands definitely hard to find and slow to operate.

The thing I did like most about the ECOTI was it gave me a full image in my right tube where I had it mounted unlike the 3/4 image the COTI produces.  My big take away in this arena is that for the additional money to go from COTI to ECOTI for those that already purchased at the $3K price is that there are better thermal options to even further our abilities.  During class we had exercises with roving patrols and sentries that I struggled to detect do to speed and distance while needing to move.
I assure you that the COTI or even the ECOTI is not capable of capturing info like whatever JW was using.  Having something hand held and using it along with my COTI is the direction I will now be exploring.

Here are a couple of thermal pics taken during class by JW and property of Defense Mechanisms.

Good rundown. I have a coti on a pvs14 and a helion XP50 on a shoulder camera sling. Coti is for constant scanning and close range (200 yards and in) alerting. The helion is used to scan larger open areas and to investigate what my coti is detecting. Key word is detecting. The coti is terrible for any sort of ID.

I was debating buying a helmet mounted thermal like an mh25 or a NOX but I truly believe the coti is in a league of its own especially for $3k and paired with a higher mag scanner it doesn't leave me wanting for anything.

100% this. Spent 6hr last night hunting coyotes with an almost identical setup, just with dualies. COTI basic model was great for safety between hunters and close spotting. Accolade perfect for long range spotting. Shots were made with PVS30.
