Hi all

I just got a pvs14 here and was told it is 3rd Gen.

I opened the ocular and see no marking on the tube that I can discern. Do I need to go further, or is there any way to tell?

Pvs14 white phosphor, no gain control, single battery housing, ir illuminator.

I took a pic of the inside but forgot that I can't post them here. Trust me there's nothing written on the tube unless there's something very tiny written directly under the lite pipe.

I'm in kind of a jam for time, any quick answers here?

Completely unmarked. What I meant by no gain control was no knob.

The housing has a cheesy sticker that says pv14 wp. Yes pv14...

It’s probably an old 6015 housing. Many of those had no gain control, no purge port, and a dual-aa battery pack.

Or, it could be some knockoff type unit from Europe or Russia. Really can’t tell without any pictures...

Is that really a thing? The image looks good I just dont know 100% which tube it is without something to go from. I'm working on pics, will post if I can.

Well yes. Years ago Morovision, USNV and others were making budget 6015's.

Figures. Any way I can Id the tube without markings? I could pop it out of the housing if there's a chance there could be some identification hidden in there.

pulling the tube would certainly help with ID'ing it. Did it work well? Or were you having issues with the tube's performance?

No issues but I'm pissed because it was sold to me as an atn pvs14 gen 3 wp

And now I find out that it's probably not any of those things. Other than white...

If you don’t get a factory data sheet with a NV product this is a serious risk you run.

Just like a car fax report, try and get a data sheet.

The ONLY way to tell, with certainty, whether it's Gen3 or not is to look at the photocathode.

Even if it is blue, it could still be Gen2. You need you examine reflections of point sources of light to determine whether visible light can travel through the photocathode to be sure. Gen2 will actually let light get through to the MCP due to it's relative thinness, and you can see geometric patterns reflected in the photocathode on a Gen2.

If you find a tube ID, though, you can generally be relatively confident.

A quick Google of the letters/numbers tell me it a Russian tube.

Same type of tube. Definitely Russian.
