Just a short question

Is there a difference in optical quality between an ANVIS eyepiece and PVS-14 eyepiece?

No they're the same between the Anvis-9 and PVS-14. The Anvis-9 rear lens isn't threaded for the eyecup ring though. My wife's PVS-14 has an Anvis-9 rear lens since she doesn't like the eyecups.

Unless you’re referring to AVS6 eyepieces which are different

Anvis-6 rear lenses will still work with a PVS-14. They dont have as good a field of view. I used one as a place holder until I found a deal on a 14 ocular.

Good catch.

@patriot_man
They’re different not in optical quality but in size, they’re smaller than the -9 and -14 oculars.

Thanks Augee.  I was starting to get confused as I never noticed a difference other than the eye cup mounting flange thingy (technical term)

While there are numerous different models of the ANVIS based on application (usually having to do with lens filters, accessories, etc.) in general the AVS-6 is intended for Army rotary wing use, and usually has the accessory ring attached to a translating objective lens (the lens itself stays put when the objective focus ring is rotated so as not to disturb accessories like HUDs). The AVS-9 is intended for Air Force fixed wing use and usually does not have accessory rings installed, and has a rotational focus lens assembly.

Augee has the gist of it.

The USAF decided on AN/AVS-9 goggles way back in OMNI III as they found it to be superior for focus at altitude.  USAF used it for everything though, including Rotor wing, and just dealt with the fact that you had to focus the goggle before mounting the AVS-7 HUD.

USN/USMC also used the AVS-9, although they had different minus-blue configurations for rotor wing and fixed wing.  I really liked the F4949R goggles they had for the CV-22/MV-22.

By now, USAF owned AVS-9s (F4949) should have the LIF rings epoxied on.  There was a general requirement to do so when we went into Iraq the 2nd time.  I don't know if that ever actually got done though.

Interesting that they epoxy them on. I have LIF adapters on order for my AVS-9 objectives that are slip on.
