I have been wanting to get a NV scope to shoot hogs with but can not afford anything more than $1500.00 to $2000.00
Is the PVS4 a good choice for this price range? Anything else in this price range I am missing?
The scope will be mounted on a flat top AR in 6.8
Thanks for any help you can give!

the 4's are good scopes, i might try to look a little longer for a lower price.....

The ones we were issued were crap and useful only on a SAW. Reticles frequently detached themselves and wouldn't keep a zero. I think you can spend your money better on a gen 2 monocular(another advantage as the an/pvs-4 is a big honkin thing).

PVS-4 I've had is quite sturdy.
They are heavy/big but also reliable in my experience.
I'd say for 1500 you might be better off with gen2 D740 or something like that for a touch more.

The thing is huge

Had one for a while, could only mount it on a carry handle and it made the rifle unwieldy as hell. When it's huge like that I'd simply leave it home when I go camping.

PVS14 or MUM, on the other hand, is handy and not much larger than an Aimpoint.

I'd love to see a PVS4 mounted on a helmet

If you have 2,000 dollars you have got yourself some excellent gen3 scopes like a PVS14 slightly used at your disposal.

I think the PVS-4 in a Gen 2 configuration can't be beat due to it's lens system. When I was doing that Supervision review, I was darn impressed as it consistently out performed the Supervision. The Gen 3 is obvious but with the large Catadioptric the PVS-4 uses, light gathering and resolution bring out the best of a Gen 2 tube.

Edited, a primo PVS-4 is worth 1400-1500. You can find them cheaper, but they are worth it IMHO.

PVS-4 on top of course.

I've read that the PVS-4 will stand up to the recoil of a 308, whereas a PVS-14 wont- at least not repeatedly. Thats why some folks bother to put a gen3 tube in a huge-sized PVS-4.

I guess I'm an old fart going back to the days when the PVS-4 was the premium scope and the PVS-5 dual tube goggles were top of the line. I never had a problem with either one and today with the lower prices of the older systems, I still use them on my civilian weapons. No, they're not going to be as light as a PVS-14 but then again back in the day going to war was a lot simpler and the larger, heavier sight wasn't a big deal because you weren't carrying as much crap as the pepsi generation is these days. I agree that you might be able to do better on the price but the PVS-4 is still a good scope so I wouldn't worry about that.
