Paperwork wise and how much money, roughly, would be looking at?  Would you have to do a different form for it being a SBR, one for it being suppressed, and then one with the FA trigger group?

Buy an MP5SD sear gun.  It will be around $15K for the gun.  If done right, there should be three tax stamps with it - 1.  the sear, 2. the silencer, 3. the short barrel rifle receiver (total $600).

Do not buy a registered receiver, and whatever you do, DO NOT BUY A HTA MP5SD.  'nuff said.

Whats HTA?

I'm totally new to HK and the NFA, but I'm about to be pulling down some serious dough and want a few nice toys

Dusty_C, a must read for you is www.hkpro.com/hkconversions.htm.  It's a long article but will give you a good background before you plunge into this.

There are three different types of guns -- clip on, push pin and sear.  The article above walks you through the differences.  You need to determine whether you want a sear or push pin gun.  The clip on is inferior to the other two types.  (The push pin and clip on are both "registered receiver" guns -- read the article!)

HTA is short for Hard Times Armory, a manufacturer whose MP5SDs are the ugly pieces of crap I've ever seen and you'd be advised to stay far away.

Presuming one could even find a SD "pistol", then yes, you could do that.
