So I bite the bullet and ordered one..... Mostly happy but it came with a mismatched bolt and I got one of the ones that got used. I am happy about the fact it has got some character marks, just not about the bolt being mismatched. My fault for not reading the fine print.

Damn. I have taken my unissued M48 with bayonet (not matching sn) to a couple of gun shows, and get offers for maybe $250.00. I have been asking $300.00, which I thought was very reasonable, and according to what you paid, it is.

She is a little rough, but I am hoping she will clean up well. I have ordered a set of head space gauges to check the head space once the chamber is cleaned. Anything else I should do?

Who's giving the offers?  If it is a dealer, and he can get $300 when he puts it on his table, then $250 is a pretty good offer considering he has to make some markup.  If its from just people at the show then maybe you've got a point...

Anyway....  now kicking myself for not having bought a few more back when they were $99 everywhere.

I got mine a few months ago (Actually, it might be a 24/47),, took it to the range, and ... nothing.

Bolt full of cosmoline. My first VZ24 had no where near the goo level. Can't wait to get out again and try it.

Point is, clean it out well before you try it.

The offers were from both sides of the aisle. My frustration is seeing guns like the op bought (I`m not knocking you, op) go for almost $300.00, counting shipping and maybe FFL fees, in that condition. Mine is unissued, with a sling and bayonet, also unissued.

I wouldn't say so. I paid $249 for my M48BO that is all matching minus bolt. Anything under three bills for a Mauser these days I think it a good deal provided it's not beat to shit. And it looks like yours will clean up nicely.

+1,

You paid market or a tad bit above because of the mismatch. But no way were you shafted.

Good to know. I got it apart and have started cleaning her up. Without a doubt this rifle was issued and the user left some personal marks. That part is pretty cool, but just my luck not to get a "pretty" one.

Is everything machined on it?  Floor plate, trigger guard, barrel band?  M48A and B had stamped parts.

Look at his picture of the receiver. The pics are still up. It is a M48, not M48A or B.

Is there any way to tell what year M48s were built? I didn't see a date on mine like Mosin's have. Also, what wars/battles could M48s have been used in?

Some rules of thumb for getting approximate production dates:

M48 1950-52

M48A 1952-65 (stamped magazine floor plate)

M48B 1956-65 (still marked M48A but they have stamped magazine floor plates, trigger guards, and H-bands)

Cyrillic acronmy FNRJ marked on receiver ring 1953-63

Cyrillic acronym SFRJ marked on receiver ring 1963-65.

I would have called them up and refused to accept it .. Ive had to do this a few times lately. Century sent me an Abortion UZI not long ago with real weird stamping all over the receiver and looked like it had been mauled with an ICE pick with big moon shaped cuts in the receiver

They sent me something that looked completely different the second time around ..

Not bad though... I wish the price of 8MM would come down..
