Right of front sight blade stamped A

Upper handguard is darker than lower. Stock does not have a pistol grip, think they call it a scant stock? Has what appears to be the original sling. Sling has 2 very light stamps below each keeper "MILSCO 1944"
Gun is in pristine condition so far. I plan to take it down tomorrow and will post pics.
What should I be looking for as I strip this down? I didn't come across any stock stamps indicating arsenal rework. So far no other proof marks. My Garands have more numbers on various parts than this. On further exam looks like some stock stamps may have been filled just in front of the magazine plate. Has two wooden dowels behind the rear sling swivel, stock repairs?
Like every gun from this period this one comes with a story. Friend of my FILs bought this at the estate sale of a friend. Deceased friend (WWII Navy) was handed this gun as he got off the boat being discharged at the end of WWII. "Never fired" Not sure if I buy that but that's the story. He paid $750 at the estate sale.
This one on Gunbroker doesn't look half as good as what I'm holding.
