I inherited my Fathers gun stuff and have two shoe boxes full of old odd ball ammo collected in the 40s and 50s. In sorting through it I found several rounds of .30 Army that looks just like 30-40. Are they the same? If so when did they stop using the term .30 Army?

Are there any web sites that can help me figure out some of this ammo?  I have two five round stripper clips of I believe 8mm who's head stamp reads DWM 1917. Another stripper clip hold five empty cases that are short cases that are about 45 cal. Lots of ammo with rings around where the head stamp sits. The shell base looks like a target with rings and the primer is the bull. Fun stuff.

DWM is Mauser. 30 Army is the Krag and Winchester always used that name on it's stuff until lately.

Yes it is. .30 Army is .30-40 Krag and .30 Govt is .30-06. I believe these titles went out of use in the pre-WWll years.

to add further confusion, many older Winchesters in 30-40 Krag were marked 30 Govt, while the rifles chambered in 30-06 were marked 30 Govt-06. My Winchester Model 54 built in 1936 is marked as such, in fact prior to 1950 all Model 70s chambered in 30-06 were marked that way

.50 Gov't is .50-70. This was the first USGI centerfire rifle cartridge.

.30 Gov't is .30-40 Krag. Also known as:



.30 USG and .30 USA (US Army).  

RA18 is Remington Arms 1918.
FA 8 05 is Frankford Arsenal August, 1905.



.30-06 was .30-1906 and .30 G 1906.

Somehow I'd always thought the .30 Army and .30 Govt. were different cartridges. Guess I was wrong. Like that hasn't happened before.
