How many people actually re-work the stock on their old pieces? I'd like to see the results any any recipes you might have used.

That's nice. What brand of stain did you use?? I have a Romo that I would like to refinish like that.

When I stripped my 91/30 it was the worst piece of wood I had ever seen on a rifle. I elected to stain with some mahogany then apply a BLO finish.

I thought about burning mine with a torch to get the lines in more.

Never tried it yet though.

I was toying with the idea of redoing my stock. That's why I asked for pictures. A deep mahogany stain seems like the best match. I just want to get rid of that awful red shellac and smooth out some marks left by the crate.

Minwax. After 2 coats I used a spray on poly. That was 4 coats and cant rember the brand. I also did a 91/59 the same way.

All of those rifles look good.What did you guys use to strip the shellac off?Any sanding done or use of some steel wool ?

Denatured Alcohol will strip the shellac right off.

I have refinished a number of Mosins and made them look like new.

Here is a post where I used Easy-Off Oven Cleaner to remove the old finish.

I stripped this down with acetone, sanded it down working up to 320 grit, and used tung oil finish. No stain, just clear finish only.

I like the laminate it looks good bare. Mine is a solid stock so it looks a bit like a Louisville Slugger once the shellac is sanded off.

91/30 laminated stock

before

Stripped

After 2 coats of clear Behr 600

No sanding, all I used was acetone and steel wool to remove the old finish. Then applied 2 coat of Behr 600.

I like mine Mosins just fine as they are. None of them are refinished.
