My uncle lives in Va, and is wanting to find out some more info, and possibly sell some rifles that where handed down to him.. Basically, I'm tryin to find out model etc.. and approx value for trade/sell I don't know anything about these types of things... so was looking for some help...
All my uncle knows...... "The story is that my dad got this rifle from a friend of his brother who is a Swiss native. The stamp on the underside shows he was a Sergeant and his name was Galleo I think. See photo of name for better spelling or rank. This was all done in the early 70’s. My Dad originally wanted it or a long range deer rifle."

It's a Schmidt Rubin model 1911 rifle. Unless the bore has gone to heck for some reason, they are considered one of, if not the, most accurate of the Swiss rifles. $300-$600 depending on condition, etc.

Round buttplate with splice pistol grip would be a 96/11. Flat buttplate would be a 1911

Yup, 96/11.
The rifle should be worth at *least* $350, assuming the bore is in good shape (and most are). In 1913, as a result of a decree signed on January 13, 1911, conversion of 1896-type rifles to approximate to the 1911 pattern began in the Eidgenoessische Waffenfabrik. By March 1, 1920, 135,770 rifles had been altered. They had four-groove rifling and chambered the Ordonnanz 11 cartridge.
As might be expected, this model markedly resembled the Model 1911 Rifle, some of the differences being: * rounded buttplate on the M96/11, flat on the M11; * pistol grip worked into the stock on the M96/11, integral to the stock on the M11; * cutouts on the bottom of the receiver for older magazines on the M96/11, none on the M11 (picture); * slightly differently shaped trigger guard on the M96/11 than on the M11 (picture). http://www.radix.net/~bbrown/schmidt_rubin.html#m1896-11 |
