It looks great!
Strip the finish off it then apply about 8 coats of Formby's low gloss tung oil. Use 0000 steel wool between coats and it will look like a million bucks. I'm serious. |

Thanks It looks really cool from the bottom, perfectly symmetric. What's your recommended method for stripping the finish?

Looks like a Russian arsenal repair. Pretty neat. If the finish is shellac, you might want to leave it alone. Shellac is what the commies used on their Mosins for years. On a shellac finish use denatured alcohol to strip the finish. Then spit coat and finish with Behr #600 Scandinavian Tung Oil Finish ZM |

You should be very happy !
If you Bubba the wood , it you will ruin the collector value of it . Sell it and buy another, it's easily worth twice what you paid for it . The Russian splice stocks are fairly uncommon and desirable to people who collect the Mosin variants and oddities. |

Looks like a Finnish made stock to me. They made most of their stocks this way. Is there a cartouche with the letters SA anywhere around the area of the serial number? If so it means the rifle was accepted for use by the Finnish army during their two wars with Russia. They used captured Mosin Nagants and also built their own rifles from Mosin Nagant receivers. This will add some value to the rifle if it does have the SA mark on it..

It is an uncommon Russian type of splice. You should be happy. It probably raises the value moderately.

Mosin parts were recycled by several companies. Examples of American-contract walnut Mosin butt stocks joined to Finn Artic birch fore stocks have been documented.
Russian Mosins were supplied to/used by Spain, the Nazis, every Commie country in the world, and China. The Balkan countries used, reworked, and even manufactured their own Mosins. That is neither a Finn nor a Russian splice. It is probably Romanian or Balkan. |
