are you gonna scope it?

if so I'd go with the 91/30.

Just my opinion though, someone more knowledgable might disagree.

go over to surplusrifle.com they made some interesting hunting/sporting rifles out of the carbine versions.  They even have detailed pictures and directions to follow to build one.

I would vote for the 44 or 38, 20inchers.
I have "several" of the 44's and they are great, handy, solid shooters.

Yea, but they are near impossible to scope and keep zeroed in.

Why would the 20" be harder than the longer one? I have both and if I was buying it for a range gun I like the long one but if I was walking with it alot and through brush and stuff I would prefer the 20".

If you are going to walk around or stalk trying to pop a deer up- get the shorter one. If you are in a deer stand with a ghood rest- get the longer one.

Or, if you've got a bit more $$ to spend, get a Finnish M39.

Generally world's apart in terms of accuracy, but they're more expensive and a lot heavier.
