What is the difference between "silvertip" surplus ammo vs. the regular unmarked tip ammo?  I'm trying to decide which to buy for my M38 Nagant rifle.  There is a slight difference in price, the silvertip is a little more, is it worth the extra$?  Would like some help on this.  Thanks!!

grain weight usually.  Silver is light ball from what I've seen, around 148 gr, where as yellow tip is around 180 gr, and no tip is up to the manufacturer.  Should say which grain weight on the item from whoever you're buying it from online.  I've never seen one that didn't list the grain weight.

The Czech silvertip by the way has a steel core:

Thanks for the info guys!  How thick is that piece of steel Bridger? (it looks like an impressive round)

I've got a piece of metal just like that too. The holes for the railroad spikes work well with "S" hooks.

It looks to be about a half inch or maybe a little less, haven't measured it. It's what the rails for a railroad lie on, in between the rail and the tie. I did find one that's even thicker though!

I think the steel core really made the difference, the shallow dimples you see are from .308 and .30-06, though I'm sure if it was steel core ammo they would have performed similar. Some rounds went through and some didn't, not really sure why that is but then again this was from from a scientific test!

The Czech Silvertip is good stuff, and you get to shoot holes in things!

For the M38 I'd shoot the silver tip.  It has much less recoil in this little rifle and I have seen no difference in accuracy between it and yellow tip through my M44.  Of course the fireball from the yellow tip does look pretty cool at dusk.

Unless I am mistaken, steel core ammo shot into a steel or iron target, has a very high ricocet rate.  I would not do this at anything under 100 yards.  Good shooting.

This link is a great reference for 7.62X54R ammo:

Cool pictures! I got very similar craters on my 5" sqaure swinger target my buddy made out of some 3/4" mild steel plate. The rounds that seemed to do the most damage were Swiss GP11 rounds out of my K31.

Those LPS rounds can come back at you even at 100yds! I had one shot from my M44 that hit the target at a funny angle and it zoomed back over my head and was heading towards the highway a 1/2mile away.. I packed up and left ASAP as you could imagine.
