It depends on which Mauser, how much and condition.
Are you wanting it good to go "out of the box" or to use as a sporter?
Check the dept. store prices against prices at SOG, AIM, and others.

it could be if the let you sort through a bunch of them.i've know a few people who fould so very nice milsurps at sporting goods stores.
when i first read the title i thought you were taking about storebrand mausers like jc higgins & some of the others that were built in the 50's.

Some of the best finds I have heard of came from department stores.  The buyer just has to know what to look for and know the history of the arm in question.  And that can only be learned by doing your homework on that particular firearm.  
Short answer, check for matching numbers, the more matching the better, and I don't mean forced electro-penciled matches either.  IMO those types of "matching" are not any better than a mis-match except it means that the headspace has been checked and deemed OK more than likely.  And know what any markings that may be present mean.  Know a Waffenampt from an arsenal rebuild mark as well as any other markings that might appear on the particular firearm in question.

One of the Big5 stores down here in Tucson has been keeping a good supply of some pretty decent milsurps. I've bought 3  a yugo 24/47 a M.N. 91/30 and a M44.
And the price didn't set me back a whole bunch.
