8mm, 7.62 R or .308

Which of these have the best overall balistics. I'm guessing .308 with the russian rd second. Reason I ask is I have no clue about 8mm or the russian round but I now have several rifles chambered in them.

I am not an expert, but my humble opinion is that it depends on the quality of the rifle and the quality of the ammo.

The .308 is an inherently accurate and more modern cartridge, but I'm realy not sure that it's all that superior to the other cartridges if manufacturing quality is equal.

Both the German and Russian cartridges have proven themselves to be ballistically great cartridges, so long as you're using a good rifle and good ammo. I'd almost insist that it's the shooter more than the cartridge that's going to make the difference.

Short answer: Practice with all three and see which you're best at shooting.

2600 FPS with an 8mm 196 grain FMJ is a pretty badass round! I don't know if it's true, but I read on here that the 8x57mm Mauser hard steel core penetrator stuff would pass through ceramic body armor inserts.

I was always under the impression that 7.62x54R was more powerful than .308, but not by much. I could be wrong though.

That 1941 Turk 8x57 has been clocked at over 3300 fps. That's fast for 150 grain.

I'm getting old and frail. I tend to look for stuff without a LOT of recoil.

The Romanian 8mm is about 156 grain and I've generally heard good things about it.

I've had good success with the Romanian 8x57. You do hear an occassional complaint about blowbacks in the 70's steel cases. I've never had one of those do that though.

If you want Turk, it seems to be gone from major distributors, but may be at shows. 1947 is known for brittle brass/cracked necks, but the rest of the years are fine overall. It has a very sharp pressure curve and your shoulder will notice it.

what's a blow back? I only hate that they get stuck in the chamber sometime because of the steel case expanding.

Bust a primer, and gas comes towards your face instead of out the bbl. The mauser design handles this more gracefully than the mosin bolt...

I have a couple of .308's heavy barrel mauser. The kick isn't to bad. I also have 8mm mauser and a nagant. I can shoot 50 to 70 rds in 8mm and I'm flinching the last dozen. All seem to have good ballistics. I've only used the surplus 8mm and it does ok. I can hit targets as big as a sheet of plywood easily to 700m . at 400 to 500 its not hard to hit mansize targets. the nagant has more kick, is less refined than the mauser so I don't shoot it near as much.

Even if it didn't , the person hit with it, isn't likely to be getting up and doing the tango. And yeah, Id say that the russion round , the 8mm, the 30-06 and the .308 are all within the same ball park as far as ballistics are concerned.

I have heard that too about the German 8mm AP. It makes sense as the ceramic plates are rated for .30-06 M2 AP rounds, but not for 8mm AP, which is more powerful.

The Turkish 154gr FMJ is some potent stuff. I have not felt heavier recoil in any of my other rifles except for my M95 Steyr(which is another kind of 8mm

).
