I saw this on another site -- that Winchester was coming out with a new rimfire and that it would be the fastest commercial rimfire.
Does anybody here have any inside info maybe on what caliber that might be? |

Linky ETA: apparently not, from what I gather thus far it will be called .17 WSM (Winchester Super Magnum) & travel around 3000 fps. Rumor is that Savage will make the rifle, but there is no confirmation of that, nor has Winchester's web site been updated with any official release info on either the rifle or the round. Oh well, more speculation on vaporware seems to be the order of the day. |

.17HMR moves out pretty damn fast, is very accurate, but also is at the mercy of it's low mass. |

I have a bunch of updates on my Varminter site. The wholesalers are showing two 20 grain (V-Max and another) and one 25 grain V-Max offering. If they can get the 25 grain V-Max going 3000fps, then it will be very interesting. Don't forget, there are many states that do not allow predator hunting with anything but a rimfire during the day and some at night.
I am waiting for more information from Winchester and I hope to have it up soon! Eric  |

I just posted this on my site as well:
I'm waiting to hear back from Winchester directly, but in the meantime I stumbled upon this from Petersen's Hunting: The short blog post and video is titled "Introducing the New 17 Winchester Super Magnum". The author states that the 20 grain bullet is traveling at 3000 feet per second with the 25 grain bullet hitting 2600 feet per second. It also looks like Savage will be chambering this cartridge. I'll post up more as I get information. Eric |

This looks like an excellent cartridge! Also very nice that Savage is making the rifles for it as the 93r17s are great out of the box. Will .17 hmr go down in cost with this new one coming out?

I believe ammo cost was speculated to be between $15 and $25 for 50 rounds.

So the real question is, what is the real world benefit of this over a .17 HMR?
I had a Savage 93R17GV which was a wood-stocked, heavy-barreled .17 HMR bolt gun. It was a FANTASTIC combination. A real jackrabbit slayer. Would this .17 WSM be a little more suited to slightly larger game such as coyote and bobcat? I'm seriously interested in this new rifle/ammo combination but I need to have a practical reason for it first. |

Heavier bullet should buck the wind and handle the bigger varmints a tad better. I doubt the difference would be earth-shattering, but I have no experience with either one, so take that assessment with a grain of salt. |

Everything I've seen on this indicates that it'll hit a fair bit harder than the 17HMR and maintain accuracy out a little further.
Looks like ammo cost will be in line with the 17HMR. The B-Mag rifle is supposed to be available in early summer. |

Cute little round, would be better if the made it .224. Would be nice to see a new .22 shooting a 55gr fmj or match bullet out to 2500fps.
