10/22 vs. Marlin 60

I've never owned a 10/22, and I'm thinking about getting one ... I've always had model 60's ever since I was a kid, and that wasn't recently.

I spent most of last night reading the back pages of this forum, and it seems 90% of the postings pertain to the 10/22 and not many to the 60.

Why?

I had wondered if maybe folks preferred the 10/22 because of the detatchable magazine, but I actually like the tubular - or at least I certainly don't mind it, 'cause I know not even I can lose it somewhere.

I expected to see some threads on this comparison; if I missed them please forgive the dupage, and post links.

I've got a 60. It was my first rifle.
I've shot 10/22's and for me the 10/22 was more accurate. As always, YMMV.

I have both a 60 and 10/22. I think you'll find the 10/22 more popular because of the aftermarket goodies you can get for it. It will all boil down to what you want to do with it. Do you want a basic plinker or an all out plinker?

Good question. I'd say ALL AROUND plinker, and SHTF small-game getter.

Referring to stockers, your post is the first time I have heard that.

But,

I would say get the Marlin if you absolutely no desire of ever adding any aftermarket parts. Most will say the 60 will be a better shooter stock and I find the tube mags much more pleasant to load if you are going to be plinking.

that pretty much sums it up. I have both as well. the 10/22 is like the 1911 of rimfire rifles. The possibilities to mod it up is almost unlimited. The model 60 is a good rifle too but if i wanted to mod it, i would be pretty disappointed with my options. However if I wanted a simple gun to put holes in a target its a smart choice.

I guess I should say that at the time I shot the 10/22 it was more accurate than the 60. At that time, the 60 had SEVERAL thousand rounds through it and years of rough handling and the 10/22 was pretty new. I don't really remember how the 60 shot when I first got it 30 years ago. ETA: Both were stock guns.

I have both. My 60 is amazingly accurate and has been 100% with everything I've run though it. Can't say the same about my 10/22.

Haven't shot my 10/22 for accuracy, but my beat to hell older than me marlins had no problem hitting quarters at 50-100 yds open sight. However, my 10/22 is my I know I'm going hunting gun and the marlin stays in the truck in case I need to go hunting gun.

Can't go wrong either way.

The Marlin is longer and harder to load and unload. The 10/22 has more options in regard to stocks, sights, magazines and accessories. I like my 60 but I always take my 10/22 when I go shooting and leave the 60 home.

Get both. The 60 is easier to load in the cold with gloves on. I have it and a 10/22 they both go out with hunting at the same time. For me accuracy was the same untill i put a green moutain barrel and a fajein stock.

wait until u put in a Volquartzen target trigger and hammer, it will impress you.

You can get a Spee-D-Loader for the tubular magazine that will hold ~120 rounds and speed load them in seconds. The loaders cost 19.95. I like the idea that for 2 speed loaders, I could save hundreds in 10/22 mag prices to get the same amount of carriable ammo. (PS I hate paying $25 for a plastic-f'ing magazine)

In the past year I bought a used Marlin Model 60 (prob not too many rounds through it) and a new 10/22. To be honest, the Marlin is just such an impressive rifle to shoot––smooth trigger, well balanced, exquisitely accurate stock off the shelf with a 4x cheap scope. I expected to enjoy the 10/22 much more, but did not...

Theyre both great guns, I would like to spend more time shooting the 10/22 to see if it grows on me, I gave the Marlin to my brother, and my next purchase may be one for myself ;)

+1 get a 10/22 and mod that bitch. I had a stock 10/22 and the trigger was crap and accuracy was lacking. Later got a 10/22T this was much better now it has Vol. internals and a better barrel

I have both. Both are reliable and accurate.

I usually grab the 10/22 to shoot because it is shorter and handier to handle.
Box magazine vs. tube magazine is like the difference between a muzzle loader and breech loader. Just easier and faster to load and unload.

My rifles are pretty much stock but the 10//22 is much more versitile in terms of accessories and mods if you are into that sort of thing.

I've owned both, bought my 10/22 fairly recently and I shot the same groups with both.

I debated about getting another marlin, went with 10/22 because of the options and I really like the magazines (got a speed loader, butler creek) vs the feeding them down the tube.

Get an older10/22, w/alunimum trigger group and look up the "rimfire central" site ,they do 10/22(and others) like we do AR15's .

I have a few 10/22s, and my wife just bought me a Model 60 as an anniversary gift.

I shot the 60 today for the first time. I like it a lot, but I have some concerns about the plastic trigger guard. Time will tell if it holds up or not.

The trigger guards will break it you drop it on top of a rock or something. Otherwise they do fine.

10-22= Harley. ar-15, 1911's

Marlin 60= Honda cruiser, XCR,cz-75

Marlin's are arguably better gun's right from the dealer, but the 10-22 can become anything you want it to be.

I've got 10/22's, rem 597's, marlin 60, and I think I even have a marlin 99 (or whatever came before the model 60), plus 22lr pistols.

I can always use more .22lr's, cheap fun.

Apples and oranges, like any fixed-mag vs. det. mag firearms comparo would be IMHO, so I doubt you'll see many.

I have several tube-fed rimfires and I've used the Spee-D-Loader (and other similar contraptions) and found then useful but be honest –– there is absolutely no comparison, speed wise, between that and changing out a det. box mag.

(Not even taking the flexibility/high-capacity arguments into account...

)

I own both. had several of each over the years (still have my 1st 10-22)
In general I couldn't ever get a 10-22 dirty enough to quit running.
The Model 60's seem to shoot the cheap crappy ammo more accuratly than the 10-22' can. maybe its the micro-groove rifleing, who knows. Both are fine guns.

I have both.. Out of the box, my marlin was more accurate, and felt better.. My 10/22 now has a new barrel and a trigger job, and will outshoot the marlin. But the marlin is still my favorite..

I have both also, and both shoot great. My dad got the Marlin probably 15 years ago for $25, and it's been flawless.

There's a reson the Model 60 doesn't have a world of options for mods: it doesn't NEED them!

The Marlin will be more accurate than the run of the mill 10/22 as well.
