Archived [ARCHIVED THREAD] - Marlin 39A question

On left side of the this marlin 39A are two small holes that look like a screw would go into the reciever but the holes are not threaded. Ive seen some marlins 39's with and without the two holes in the side. Anyone know what Im talking about or can explain what those holes are for?
