OK guys, I have a little bit of Christmas cash to blow, and I need a .22 rifle. Initially, I was going to snatch up a Marlin lever action at Wally World, but I'm becoming more interested in the 10/22.

What exactly should I look for? Is the blueing worth a crap, or should I defer to stainless? This is just going to be a plinking and blasting gun, no precision targets, if that matters.

I read the thread about the magazines, and optics and stocks, so I think I know what I'm doing there, but tell me about the rifles themselves.

Update. Bought the standard blued/wood model. Looks like I'm blowing more cash than I thought this weekend.

Those little guns are a lot of fun, no matter what model you get. Good choice.

a) Upgrade the stock and barrel.  (.920 diameter)  That will give you a good solid gun.
b) Upgrade the trigger group.  I like Volquartsen, but there are a lot of good companies.
c) Optics.  (enough said)

In the end, the reciever is all you'll keep.

Personally, I turned my $139 Ruger 10/22 into a $550 tack driving poodle shooter.
Have fun!

I turned my $139 Ruger 10/22 into a $550 tack driving poodle shooter . . .

Me too. Now my 10/22 shoots as good as my bone stock $320 CZ 452!

Damn - you're getting groups like this from a CZ?

Well, none of my guns groups usually look quite that good at 50 yards but I'm pretty confident that the fault is not with the guns . . . But yeah, my stock CZ will shoot nearly as good as my tricked out 10/22 (Green Mountain stainless fluted, Boyd stock, trigger upgrades).

Is the CZ a bolt rifle?  My expectations for a .22 bolt gun are pretty high.

yes it is... i think 1/2 inch groups at 50 yards from a cz 452 are reasonable

Be careful van_go. A month ago, I started with a 10/22 carbine like you did and wound up building this in .17Mach2.

And it's not even broke in yet.

Don't say I didn't warn ya'!

Oh - Hell Yeah!
Give me the details.
-Who's barrel did you use?
- Which magazines are you running?
- How much did you invest?

I sense another $500 leaving my checking account.

Close.

I want something light and ergonomic for hunting, yet accurate, so probably a bull barrel and a Hogue overmolded stock will do.

It's a 20" Shaw barrel I got with the stock/ barrel combo deal from Boyd's.

- Which magazines are you running? It works great with the factory rotary mags. The others jam up, because of the tapered round.

- How much did you invest?  With the scope and all the other little goodies, $500 would probably be in the ballpark.

JEEBUS!  That is very very nice.

Details on the scope please?
Thanks!

My experience with the 10/22 is that it is more accurate out of the box than 95% of the people who shoot them.

Unless one is going into competitive shooting, I don't see much point in spending gobs of money converting a good rifle into a marginally better one.

But hey, that's just me, knock yourself out.

Thanks, RRA-A2! The scope is a Simmons 4.5-14x44 AO ATV. Got it off eBay for around $80 rings included.
