I was at Walmart last night looking at their 10/22s and found one that was stainless steel, has a 22" barrel and iron sights. The rear sight was fold down. They have them for under $200. This would be my first 10/22 and I just want it for plinking at the range. The questions I have are:

Is the 22" barrel barrel better than the standard 18.5?

Is $174 a good price?

No idea why it would have a 22" Barrel on that sucker. The price is a good price and a longer barrel *could* mean it would be more accurate. Most MATCH GRADE barrels are 20 inches though. Plenty of 18.5 aftermarket and even some 16.5 Carbon Fiber barrels.

Are you sure about that 22 inches?

It is a factory 10/22 made by Ruger, specifically for Walmart, who happens to be the largest retailer of 10/22's in the world. It is not the first "Walmart Special" from Ruger.

I have a 16.5 VQ carbon barrel on mine, it'll shoot 5 shot nickel groups at 50yds with wolf match and just a sandbag in the front.

I double checked and it is a 22" barrel. Is the added length going to help or hinder accuracy? Or does it just not matter?

Accuracy is not a function of barrel length. When I got a new barrel for my 10/22, went with a 20 inch. I wish I had gone with something shorter though, as it handles like a brick. With the factory weitght 22" though, it won't be as heavy and my 20" bull, so it would probably be OK.

What was the first ?

I have the SS 22" barrel Wal-Mart special. Great gun, I couldn't tell you if it shoots better. I haven't really tried to compare.

No barrel length doesn't matter with .22lr Why??? Because it already reaches it's max velocity before reaching 16in, meaning it doesn't add anymore velocity/stabilization. Going from a 20" GM bull to a 16.5" GM fluted bull, it stays just under .5" at 55 yards with Wolf MT.

the length of the barrel as everyone has stated doesnt make it shoot any better.

the walmart special is a nice rifle which is what i started with, the barrel and stock is special for the walmart.

also fetches a nice amount if you ever decide to swap it out for something else. i got it cause i wanted the ss

The Wally World Special, with the 22" SS barrel, is also the only 10/22 thats marked "Rifle".
The regular 18.5" barreled models, blued and SS, are marked "Carbine".

- one Rifle
- four Carbine's

-ed; $174. is a good price, I paid $214. in '01.

Thought I'd mention something. Someone else pointed out that the .22lr reaches its max velocity at or around 16" and this is more or less true. Me thinks that with a 22" barrel, you may even LOSE velocity over a 16" barrel believe it or not. I remember seeing some published data backing this up awhile back but I forget the source.

but i never notice any loss in accuracy or what not in mine.

... not to mention reducing the speed of a 22 bullet from supersonic to subsonic may not be a bad thing for target shooting. Something about breaking the sound barrier might cause such a small bullet to flutter a bit.
