My son has a 10/22 that doesn't the Federal ammo he uses in it. I think he has problems FTE but I not sure. What ammo do you use in your 10/22? Thanks TIm

Go to Wall Mart and pick up 4-5 different 22lr brands and try each.  Every gun seems to be a little different.  The Ruger 10/22 is a picky gun when it comes to ammunition.

Mine like the Reminigton 'Thunderbolts' the best.

The other thing you can try is installing a Volquartsen extractor.   Best $12 you will ever spend!

Enjoy

+ a million on the extractor.  I never have had any stovepipes or fail to extracts after the VQ was installed.  Now if I could get my BC steel lips mags to feed right!!!

Mine eats and ejects anything I feed it.  It's not the target model, it's the Sporter model.

Ruger cautions against shooting Stingers in the target model.  Since mine isn't the target model it even loves Stingers.

Don't shoot Stringers unless you are sure you don't have a target model 10/22.

Mine doesn't like federal either. I use remington and cci with no problems.

Mine has a Green Mountain barrel, but  it likes CCI mini-mags the best.  So do ALL of my other .22s.   Even the Eley's don't shoot as well in my 10/22.

As for the Federals, if they are the American Eagle brand, those don't cycle in my P22, or in my 10/22.  They seem under powered.

I have found that for cheap stuff, the Remington 500 loose pack hollowpoints at Wal-Mart is the best stuff.  It is as accurate as the CCI's, but does occasionally have a couple of fliers in each 10shot group.

+1.  It should also be noted that I have the target model.  Love them CCI mini-mags...

A factory target model will have a bull barrel, instead of a tapered one.

FTE's?

is this a new rifle? if so let it break in with about a brick or so and just bear with it for awhile

if its stovepipeing/fte completely then try changing out the extractor to a volquartsen one.

my 10/22 will eat anything i tell it to.

I have 3 10/22s right now.  I have Green Mountain barrels on 2 of them, and a Whistle Pig on the other.  So far, I have yet to come across a brand it won't feed or eject.  I have replaced the extractors on all of them with Power Custom ones (track down Red Star Arms on this board, they are partnered with Power Custom).  I highly recommend the change.  Best upgrade you can spend a few bucks on.  Oh, and replace the bolt stop with a urethane buffer.  It will be quieter (the action) and not beat the shit out of the rear of the bolt.

El cheapo Remington Golden Bullets in the 550 bulk packs from Academy for only $7.88.

They work satisfactorily in both my 10/22 and P22.

Come to think of it, my idea of "satisfactory" is quite low when it comes to plinking at 25 yards.  I get about 10% duds with the stuff.  They have always gone boom after I have recocked, so I guess that the brass is probably too hard.  Time to find a different brand....

I have exactly the same results from the Remington Golden Bullets .22 LRs through the same 2 guns.  Once I shoot the last brick I have, I'm not buying anymore.  It's shit ammo.  I'm trying Winchester Wildcats next.

A Volquartson extractor is about $8 and takes 5 minutes to install.  You should get one of these.

I have used tens of thousands of Federals in mine.  When I started to have FTE, I changed extractors.  Problem solved.

Wolf Match Target, Eley Club Xtra and Winchester Dynapoints are the preffered ammo for my Green Mountain barreled 10/22's.  I also agree on adding a urethane buffer.  Another good modification is a Volquartzen hammer to lighten that lousy Ruger trigger pull.  Or you could add a KIDD trigger.  270$ but the absolutley sweetest trigger you can put on your 10/22!!

Mine likes the Federal Bulk Pack. It works well in all my 22s. I'm also a fan of the Remington Vipers and Yellow Jackets.

I shoot a lot of Federal Bulk Pack, and also the Winchester stuff in the gray box.  I've tried a lot of different ammo, and don't recall having any problems with any of it.

Wolf low grade match ammo shoot GREAT in both of my 10/22s...one ragged 9mm sized hole all day at 50 yards.
