and I am leaning towards another .22 or a .17HMR...

I allready have a 10/22, semi tricked out....

BUT I would not mind a Marlin Mod 19......

OR

A NEW in 17HMR..... ya now that has got me thinking real hard.......

This is what I got, a Savage Mod 93R17 17HMR, and it is sweet...

What kind of safe?

For rifles I would get a 10/22 magnum or a 10/17....now that full capacity magazines are back

The safe is a Liberty Colonial.....

The limit on the rifle is $150, I can get a NEF 17HMR, which is what I am leaning towards.....

I beleive they will alos put the money towards another rifle that is mor ethan the 150 limit, I was going up there today, but am stilll sick, so I am staying home, BUT if I can I will get up there next week....

the sad part is my safe is FULL, FULL I SAY, damn, I should have got a larger one, but I really thought a safe that holds up to 25 long guns, would be big enough....HONEST, I did......

I have 2 other Handi-Rifles, a .223 and a.243. and both of them are little tack drivers.

They will hold consitant groupings of 1/2 to 3/4 in if I do my part, and that is with Remington Core-Lockt ammo.....

For the value, less than $200, you really do get a good rugged rifle........

You can never have a safe that is too big!!!!

I just recently recieved a Ft Knox "Yeager Custom" and the only thing that  is too big about it is it wont fit in my house but I have the shelves where I can get 52 plus long guns in it.  Right nopw I have it in the 26 gun configuration

I really like the handi-rifle cocept now that they will retro fit barrels.
I believe you can use the same reciever for all the rifle calibers.
Shot gun recievers can not be refitted with rifle barrels.
I'd be leaning towards a 22 Hornet and then have it made into a K-Hornet as funds allowed.
This would be a great walking rifle and confidence builder for a young shooter.

At one time or another I've had:
22 Hornet
223
30-30
357Max
44
45-70
410
20ga.
A shrewd talking buddy got my 357 Max barrel/Leupold 2.5 in trade for a new (No Safety)Marlin 1894 in 357.
I thought I skunked him til I found out they made damn few in "The Max".
They made it again about 5 years ago BUT in a heavy (and to me useless) contour.

I've still got the old H&R Topper 12ga. 18" with a poly-choke. It fits in a back pack and lends a great deal of comfort...

Well I'd go for the 10/17  you  are in praiie dog country, and 100 or less  the 17HMR  smokes prairie dogs into chunks and a slight mist

I have a Handi Rifle in 22 Hornet and it's one of my favorite rifles for hunting and shooting.  I topped it with a Leupold 2-7x33 and it will keep under 1 inch groups at 100yds and there is no kick at all.  It has more power than the .17HMR and you can reload them if you desire.  Ammo is pretty close in the cost area too.  Come to think of it, I think the hornet is my favorite cartridge right now.  Either way you can't go wrong with a Handi Rifle.  Here's a link to their www.hr1871.com/ , they even have a forum to ask questions in.

Thats a great rifle. I got the Synthetic/stainless about 6 months after the .17 came out and I love it.  It's been a real tackdriver.  I need to find some land to get out and hunt with it though. Lost my hunting grounds due to passing of owner/ sale by family.  You should consider trying a "sweet 17" scope on it, very nice scopes for the price(100.00 +/-).  congrats on the gun.
