this is a cugir (division of the romarms group of miliary arsenals) built match rifle that was used from the mid 1950's up until the 1970's for cadet training similar to our rotc/jrrotc marksmanship programs.

please inspect your bore carefully. most of the ones i've looked at are very worn and/or counterbored.

some guys are getting good accuracy out of theirs will others are reporting terrible accuracy and some are reporting mis-firing (worn firing pins? peined chamber faces? weak striker springs?).

the cugir repeaters were great deals. i think i bought something like 6 or 7 of them from dunhams, but i have not been able to find one of the match weight single-shots in good enough condition to make a project out of yet.

the big problem about the single-shot cugirs is they really got used and used alot. you probably already know this, but it's damned difficult to shoot out the bore of a single-shot smallbore. it takes untold thousands of rounds on top of many more thousands of rounds...yet some of the rifling i've looked at has been among the faintest i've seen in any mil-surp rifle.

from what i can see, the guys that jumped on them when they first hit the market stood a good chance at getting one in reasonable shape.

over the summer i noticed the quality rapidly slipping.

if there is any rifling left to work with, a good smith can set that bbl. back, rechamber and recrown it for about a c-note or so.

the polish mosin-magant .22 is well worth buying, as are any of the german mauser 'sporting rifles' and 1903 trainers.

some of these rimfire are rare and some get quite pricey!

the cmp just sold the last of the remington 513t's and this summer sold off the winchester 52d's. you may find some for sale privately.

m12 h&r's, mossberg 44's and 144's, remington 541's...all worth looking at and adding to the collection.

while not necessarily c&r's, the romanian 5-shot repeater is a must have. keep an eye out for old winchester, remington, marlin, stevens/savage rimfires.
