Throwing a line I believe

Yup. it is for enclosing a lead ball so you can throw a line. Whenever a heavy hawser (for towing, for example) is passed between ships, they send over a lightweight "messenger line" to which they attach the heavy rope. When throwing a line you need to weight the end so it'll go through the air. ETA The ones in the pic look like they'd make nice |

Originally they were used to add weight to the end of a line. Now they are just ornamental, I make them out of 550 cord and use them for key chains. They also hurt like hell when you get popped on the head with one

I spent hours and hours at Scout Camp tying those damn things....and they do hurt when you get popped ANYWHERE with one.

They're now just tactical gear arts and crafts projects like a million other 550 cord things, like fobs on knives, paracord bracelets etc etc

it you cut the rubber off of old computer mice, the steel ball inside is perfect for use w/ 550 cord. and they deffinatly hurt , especially if you leave a few extra inches in the line.
