REM 870, good to go, always reliable, but the Mossberg 930 SPX has got great reviews over the years and some have compared it to the FN SLP.

Just a fun topic.  What would you buy?

Cheers.

this thread http://www.ar15.com/forums/t_6_1/416291_Mossberg_930_problems____AGAIN.html has made me rethink the mossberg 930

870 Police. But, I'm biased. I own one and I love it.

Considering my 930 had canted sights, stripped screws and choked on pretty much everything, I would opt for the 870P. I am not knocking Mossbergs as whole. I have a 590A1, a .22 rifle made by Mosbberg and a 9200A1 semi-auto 12 gauge and they are the bees knees. However, the 930 is junk. At least mine was.

IMO, pump shotguns have less parts, are easier to maintain, and have a very low failure rate.  Go with the 870P.

And they usually are not picky about what you feed them.

I have a Mossberg 18.5" 590A1 for my pump shotgun and a standard FNH 18" SLP. I have never had any failures with my SLP except when testing low recoil buckshot rounds. For that reason I keep my SLP loaded with Federal XM127 00 buckshot or PFC-154 00 buckshot. For the range I use 00 buckshot or slugs that are cheap but have a velocity of 1325 FPS or faster. It's a driven with a gas piston and so the recoil is pretty soft. It is more expensive than the 930 but so is the Benelli.

If you're going to get a Mossberg 930, get the JM model.

If you're open to other options, get a Benelli.

930?  Good reviews?  Hmmmm...

While there are good ones, and lots of people are happy with theirs, there are also lots of reports of unreliability and/or other problems.  Never heard much good about mossberg customer service either.  While my bedside, bump in the night, gun is a 590A1, I wouldn't trust my life to a 930 from all that I've read. If just a range toy, then I still wouldn't risk my money with the risk of getting a bad one.  Given your choices, I'd definitely say 870P.  But, that's just me...
