Problem with Remington model 11

I just recently acquired a model 11 in 16 gauge and noticed I have to press the bolt release to load every shell. The loading gate locks up until the bolt release is pushed. Is this normal? I've never had to do this with a Browning and was wondering if it is how a Model 11 works.

Not sure what the problem is, but yes it is a problem. It should work just like an A5 browning.

Thats how my Model 11 is too.

eta: They're not exact piece by piece copies of the Browning A5's. The Remington had a 1 piece bolt that you needed to push the bolt release button to top off the magazine, and Brownings had a 2 piece where it wasnt necessary. There is nothing wrong with your shotgun, its just how they got the reputation "fast to shoot, slow to reload"

Yep. Gun runs fine. I just had no idea the Remingtons had to have the bolt release held down to load.

Learn something new everyday. Thanks for the help.

I don't know about the 16, but on the 12 Model 11 you can swap in the browning parts to get the speed feed function and not have to hold the button to load.

11, 46, 48, and 19. Might have to do some slight fitting. My carrier rubs ever so slightly. I haven't filed it down yet.

Normal with the model 11. At least that is how it works with my 1923 production gun. Pain it the ass but normal.

It's not like the Model 11 is inferior. The last Model 11 was produced in 1948 and the Browning A5 didn't get the two piece lifter until the 1950's.

I have an A5 with the feature and it it as one description makes account of it:

When you place the shell into the magazine with the bolt locked open an unseen imp magically loads the round unto the chamber and closes the bolt as you remove your thumb from the back of the shell.

It I-S slicker than cow snot!
