Well with 18.5" barrels, you get 7 rounds. That seems like plenty to me.
IMO 18.5" is best, but really the only two lengths to even be considered for a tactical application are 18.5" or 20" so take your pick. |

With an 18.5, a side saddle with six rounds, 8 rounds between the magazine and chamber, maybe a light is IMHO, all the weight I want to have to hump around.

That limits the OP to 18" barrel; my preference would be 18" 870. 20"-21" can work, but it starts to get a little harder to maneuver. My first "tactical" 870 has a 21" barrel that came with the shotgun, but if I was buying new I would definitely go as short as possible. |

Depends on intended use.
Room / Hall clearing in a small house, 14" to 18" IMO would be best to make it more compact and manuverable. I would also throw a shorter stock / youth stock onto it, but thats just me. In a 3-gun situation, I would say 20" to 22" would be fine, get a few more rounds in the tube and still be small enough to manuver. |

I prefer an 18.5" 5+1 or 6+1 but I could do with a 20".

I like the extra magazine capacity of the 20". I use my Mossberg for camping and survival type situations though.

I've done the 20 and 18 inch barrels. The 18" feels so much better, especially with a loaded up mag extension.
